Irregulars

Fri Jul 18, 2008 7:56 pm

Do you get the irregular bonuses if they have supply wagons or a leader with them?

Units always receive bonuses if a leader is with them (except for maybe a particularly bad one). Actually, certain generals have bonuses specific to making irregular troops especially effective under their command. It might be in your best interest to look out for generals with those bonuses and use them for your partisan/militia troops.

Well the bonus I'm referring to specifically is the attack bonuses in hills mountains and wild. I could see a wagon - or presence of any non-irregulars - negating this bonus.

NO, i don't think they will lose the battle bonus. This is used at the element level, so irregular element will get it and regulars won't.
But of course, on movement speed, stealth etc the stack will be as slow/noticeable as the regular units. In that way, the irregulars will lost part of the usefulness.

one other thing I've noticed - you can't ambush if they have a leader. What's the use of amush then I wonder? If you try an ambush with a large irregular force it will have a penalty that probably negates the ambush bonus and if you try it with a smaller force it will generally flee in the face of overwhelming enemy stacks. It also still makes me question whether irregular bonuses are negated altogether when any non-irregulars are present.

I'm not questioning your opinion arson, just pointing out that it's an opinion. Is there any way to get concrete confirmation on irregulars and when and how their bonuses apply?

edit: Actually, I had a wagon in the stack, so that answers that. :) Non-irregulars with regulars kill the irregular ambush bonus at least.

Hi!
You can question my opinions all you want! No problem!! :cwboy:
And many times you will be right :niark:
I don't know all about the game... thats why many times is say "i think..."
Thats my best guess judging by me experience, but not 100% sure :innocent:

Now, talking about AACW and ambush... i must confess i don't think i had tried that more than a couple of times... and don't remember any success with it :bonk:
Ambush used to be pretty effective on the BoA game (and i suppose on WIA) where you have smaller units and armies, tons of Indian units and tons of wilderness terrain.
But in the AACW game things are different... i don't think its too useful.
As you say, ambushing a 10.000 division with 200 bushwhackers will have little effect on the enemy... Bonus or not, your bushwhacker will be whacked :p leure: :niark:

Personally, i use irregulars to explore and raid mainly.

Regards!

actually you can get a fairly sizeable irregular force together with the 3 element units + sharpshooters + TX Rangers on the conf side and use the terrain to your advantage - i think - by passing main forces, raiding and holding lightly/semi-lightly held rear areas and preventing flanking attacks by regulars through rough terrain. Testing it out in KY WV and MO in my pbem game.

Hi!

I don't think militia are considered irregulars or good units for ambushing.
Regarding sharpshooters, the common knowledge around here is to put one of them on each divisions. They give his especial ability benefit to all the division elements! :coeurs:
I thought by irregulars you were talking about guerrilla/raider units (texas rangers, buschwackers...) :bonk:
They are very sneaky and slippery and can be a pain in the ass, but have little staying power.

Regards!

Hmm I could be wrong but it seems to indicate the whole stack is irregular.

Also shows up that way under Roster.

..and the ambush option is available regardless.

:bonk:
You are right! it shows as irregular... :8o:
But.. what kind of 3 element brigade is that?
Did you receive it by event or recluted them by yourself??
The individual element icons seems to be militia, but the brigade icon is light infantry :bonk:
Now i'm more confused than you! :niark:
I remember the 2 militia + 1 light infantry brigades the USA recieve by event, but can't recall that CSA ones...
Is the standard campaign game? some mod? an scenario?

Rangers have a cavalry graphic, but they're actually irregular militia.

Does that apply for indians also? I assume so. The terminology in the user's manual regarding "horse" penalties in mountains, in specific, makes it confusing. Maybe "horse" should be changed to "regular cavalry" or graphics changed/ :indien:

I think the current graphic is fine and they could be remodeled as irregular light cavalry.

I wasn't clear.

I like the graphic, and think it's appropriate for rangers. Historically, rangers were irregular cavalry. Their current graphic is a good representation of irregular cavalry. In the db, they have the characteristics of irregular militia. They move and fight like irregular militia in the game. I think that should be changed, rather than the graphic.

That is, however, a fairly minor detail in my opinion.

What exactly does an irregular cavalry move and fight like? :tournepas Fast-moving, can ambush, but penalized in mtns like horse? If it were penalized would it affect the whole stack?

That sounds about right. I think Rangers should be similar to Mounted Partisans, just slightly tougher.

Yessir.

Gray, in the same vein, the Lightning Brigade also suffers from the movement issue. They were mounted infantry. They probably could use a new graphic. If you're agreeable to modding them, I'll try to find you one.

Perhaps someone standing next to a horse, rather than riding on it?

Somehow missed the latest post here when it was new. I should be able to put something together tonight.

re: text model files. Should I just link to the graphic, or would you like me to try making changes to stats?

Dang Jabber, that is some quick work; and it looks good also. Great work, as always.
