Dodgy Rivers?

Sun Feb 03, 2008 12:14 am

Hi folks, playing Union for the first time I'm somewhat worried about some of the river crossings I see after pressing shift.

One example from region 134 Albermale, VA to 133 Nelson, VA.
If you press shift on a unit in Albermale you can see a brown line even though it looks as though you must have to cross a river to get to Nelson so I would expect a blue line.

Another strange example is from 134 Albermale, VA to 125 Culpeper, VA.
This shows as blue yet from 126, Spotsylvania, VA to 125 Culpeper, VA the
shift button shows brown. Is it possible to get from Spotsylvania to Culpeper without going through Albermale and crossing the river?

Are there some link problems here?
For such an important area I would hope the river crossing links are well made.

Any thoughts?
Cheers, Chris

Thanks Gray, maybe a Pandora's box here if I can see two of these problems in the small area I looked at?

I wonder if the second example is a limitation of the shift key? Maybe the fact that to get from 126, Spotsylvania, VA to 125 Culpeper, VA shows brown as the link from Spotsylvania to Culpeper has to go via 134 Albermale, VA and this is in fact a brown link?

Having said all that I assume the link line only shows links to adjacent areas so the files must have a direct link from Spotsylvania to Culpeper? Looking at the map there may be a tiny area of adjacency but it certainly looks as though a river should be crossed in any case.

Cheers, Chris

The border between 133 Nelson VA and 134 Albermale VA is 50% river and 50% land. Since the cities are generally way out of proportion size wise, the border between these two regions is being considered land at the moment. (There is no JumpLink to tell it different).

The border between 125 Culpeper VA and 126 Spotsylvania VA is a minor river as you point out, but as in so many cases this is an oversight in that it hasn't been assigned an overridding JumpLink to reflect that, so I will fix it in the next RR MOD release (after 20080208 which was just released).

FYI: when the regions were drawn on the map, they defaulted to showing the border Adjacency(s), which you see in the .rgn files. As the game was further developed, JumpLink(s) and TransLink(s) were added to "override" these normal "land movement" border Adjacency(s). Since there are literally thousands of them, it is not surprising that a few slipped thru the cracks. I, of course, have been focused primarily on RR TransLinks(s) obviously, so thanks for pointing these out and please continue to point out any others that you find, because it is relatively easy "time wise" (in minutes no less) to fix these linkages and include them in the RR MOD files, which in the end will be officialized into the game also.

Regards

Many thanks for the explanation Gray. I may have found a RR problem also - I'll double check when I get time at home.

Cheers, Chris
