"Wiki collaboration of the week" - any takers?

Fri Nov 16, 2007 2:23 pm

Hi!

As (hopefully) most of you know, the AACWWiki has been active for approximately 3 months. At the start, it mostly consisted of the game manual, but since then, there have been various additions about specific topics, such as depots, loyalty and recently, supply, but there are still a lot of topics that are poorly covered, if at all.

Now, as a way of expanding the wiki and adding to its usefulness, I'd like to gauge the community's interest in an ongoing "wiki collaboration of the week". Here's what I have in mind:

Once every week or two, a topic will be selected that will be the subject of a concentrated effort to document it the best it can be documented. Topic's could e.g. be "National Morale", "Unit" or "Special Abilities" (We'll figure a suitable way to decide upon topics). There would be several ways to contribute:
  • Adding to or updating the article's text
  • Providing graphics and screenshot so help illustrate the article
  • Provide feedback on things that are added
  • Provide suggestions for further improvements
  • Etc, etc
Looking at that list, you should realize that there are many ways to contribute. Not everyone needs to be a full-fledged wiki author to be of help, though a few would be nice, and everyone is in any case welcome to try their hand at wiki-editing.

What I'm wondering, is if people are interested in taking part in such an endeavor? I'm not saying that you need to commit to anything; quite the contrary, you'll be coming and going exactly as you wish. I'd just like to know if there's enough interest to warrant getting this on the road :)

In time, the goal is that wiki will spread out to cover all AGE games, but for the time being, I think it's best to concentrate on AACW.

I am in, but I will warn you that my interest is only in American Civil War. :sourcil:
Forrest said something about killing a Yankee for each of his horses that they shot. In the last days of the war, Forrest had killed 30 of the enemy and had 30 horses shot from under him. In a brief but savage conflict, a Yankee soldier "saw glory for himself" with an opportunity to kill the famous Confederate General... Forrest killed the fellow. Making 31 Yankees personally killed, and 30 horses lost...

He remarked, "I ended the war a horse ahead."

I know there are some good AARs on the forums, however I believe it would be really beneficial to have a step by step through one campaign for new players to get a good overall grasp of the game. I believe this would help pull it all together for them to see how all of the different aspects of the game work together. Sometimes it is hard to read here and there to see that, or begin a campaign and you have missed an item you should have done back several turns ago..... a section of the Wiki devoted to this would be great (April 1861 Full Campaign onwards)........ just a thought :niark:

Great! I'll start getting the "paperwork" done :D

What's the best way of selecting a topic as collaboration? People offer suggestions, then we run a poll, winner becomes topic? And as a collaboration unfolds, we start a new round selecting a new topic so that's it's ready by the time the first collaboration reaches its end?

One thing I'd like to emphasize is that even if there's a collaboration going on, it by no means that people can't do whatever they like on other parts of the wiki ;)

Stonewalled, that's a good suggestion :) I'm not sure how to start it off; do you have any thoughts?

I sugest we wait on this AAR stuff for the moment and start building towards it. We can first start with easier issues and when all has been said then we can do one giant AAR.

I suggest open polls so we see what players want to read about.

Get OHgamer from the other forum interested in this game? :siffle: The man's so meticulous he wouldn't miss a thing. Of course, getting him away from that forum would be the real challenge.

That is a great idea indeed.

I've started many pages on wiki but then i had to do another wiki and i finally got sick of wiki which is a truly wonderful tool to gather knowledge but i really need a break from wiki tables and formatting :)

So far, i've taken on me the "assignment" to always keep the changelog updated (i didnt add the 1.07g data because it seems there will be more 1.07g coming soon) so don't worry about that...i can log, update the page, then close browser before feeling sick :)

You can use this as the basis of your poll. Please feel free to add to it or remove anything unsuitable, of course.

That's a good list! If the wiki is able to even cover half of it within some time, I'll consider several dimensions added to its usefulness. I took the liberty of adding the list to http://www.ageod.net/aacwwiki/AACWWiki:Community_Portal to serve as inspiration :)

When it comes to the collaboration, there are two things I have in mind; first of all, it's good if it's a topic where several people feel they can contribute in some way. Second of all, I think it would be useful to the community to be able to say "here's something we'd like to know more about. Hence my suggestion for a poll about it, based mostly on suggestions, but with no harm in having some additional options, e.g. included from the J-List :)

I suggest we update mods list and if possible add a link for direct download in wiki. We have few new scenarios, generals mods and few others so...
Perhaps add all what you have to do and if that mod has been tested and working alright.
Just my two cents

Indeed, that is something which the wiki both can and should cover better :)

Sorry for "disappearing" the latest weeks; real life grabed hold and wouldn't let go for a while :( Though it serves as a good example for why I think it is important to get more people involved with the wiki; the wiki's success should not depend on a single member of the community, IMHO :)

I'll pick this up shortly, when I get some other stuff out of the way. This weekend at the latest.

As someone who is just looking at getting into the AGEOD games, and is way out his depth, something like this would be fantastic.

An AAR tutorial would be great, that not only explained the mechanics behind the game and such, but also the strategy short-term and long-term. The whole picture, so far most I've seen discuss what they did, but there's not a lot of why/how.

Anyway, I have nothing else to add, other than I'd love to see this and I'm having a heckuva time deciding which AGEOD game to pick up to play over the holidays. :)

Well one more thing, the AACW wiki is fantastic. Thanks for the work on it. I've gone through and printed out almost everything on there in case I get the Civil War game, and it's been a great help in understanding things.

OK, how's this for a time schedule:

Each collaboration takes place over the course of 2 weeks.

Monday, week 1: Start of submitting suggestions for what to collaborate on
Thursday, week 1: End of suggestions, polls/voting start.
Monday, week 2: Polls close, collaboration starts
Monday, week 3: End of collaboration

This way, at any given time, there'll be one collaboration underway, with the next one being suggestd or voted upon.

What do you think?
