Dancing Force Icons

Sat Nov 24, 2007 5:37 pm

Pardon me if this question has been addressed before (did a Forum search but found nothing), but...

As the AI does the turn resolution, what's with the "dancing" force icons?

I'm referring to, for example, Joe Johnston's avatar flitting three regions to the northeast, then back to his start region, then two regions south, then to his final turn destination, say one region to the west.

Is this dancing about supposed to signify something (it's impossible in the example for the Johnston force to be doing that much marching and countermarching), or is it just a display glitch as the AI thinks through its possible moves?

Are you sure this is not during hosting and at the end of it? During AI thinking, no actual movements are done.

As the AI resolves the turn day by day, you will see the various force icons dance about, some more than others. If this signifies actual interim movements, that's cool.

But, from time to time, you will observe some force icons doing what appear to be impossible jumps across the map. To cite the latest worst example, I had an Atlanta scenario game where Polk's force (or at least his avatar) instantly jumped from Meigs, TN up to Greene, TN (two regions to the northeast), then back to Meigs again. The Johnston example I cited in my earlier post is just the most extreme example of this I have seen so far.

The weird examples are unusual, but they do occasionally appear to happen, if you are quick and watch things closely.

If this dancing around signifies nothing, if it doesn't represent interim force movements and we should just ignore on-screen action as the days play out, or not pay too close attention to them, okay then.

But it would neat if the day-to-day force icon moves show real-time action accurately. It adds to the fascination thereby.

(If it matters, my AACW is fully patched with the latest 1.07h.)

I've noticed this too - usually just moving by one region then jumping back when movement resolution actually starts.

I have noticed that somewhat as well but since I haven't played my AI game in a while now and have been the non-host in PBEM games I don't have any actual examples off hand. I do remember thinking to myself that it was cool though because it seemed that it was kind of purposely misleading as to where the force was actually headed. I never had one bounce off to an unrealistic location like 2 away than back though.

I just assume (or pretend I guess ;-) ) that it has to do with the hide factor because it didn't seem to happen when I had lots of units in the area, only when I had the barest of units in the area allowing to me see what is going on there. Kinda of like I was getting faulty reports from my men on the ground and if they ended up out of sight I wasn't sure where they were since they could be in a couple of different locations.

Since I posted last on here, I've just had a division leapfrog my standing army then revert to it's original position for the movement phase. It doesn't have any effect on gameplay but I would be interested to know what is happening to cause this

I would need a savegame (with backups) showing that to identify what's going on.

Not sure if I can back up enough now. When I see it again I'll send it - it does seem a fairly regular occurence. What address do I send it to??

In the Ageod Saves directory it saves your last 12 or 24 (can't remember off hand) turns so unless you have gone more than that (I want to say 24 but I honestly can't remember :bonk: ) you should be able to send it.

try support@ageod.com as the email address.

I have noticed that icons tend to be all over the place - not in the region they are supposed to be. Its easily fixed by moving the icon back to the region where it was, but it happens quite often.
