French Uniforms

Wed Apr 05, 2006 9:04 pm

This is hopefully a small request, but if it is not much trouble, could your fine artists maybe change the facing colors of the French Regiments to reflect their historical colors. It seems that the appearance of French Regiments are somewhat random, since out of the five Infantry Regiments that first appeared off of the Eastern Coast with Rochambeau, only two are historicly correct. Randomness is fine and actually preferred, but it would be so nice to have the actual facing colors. I don't have a complete list but so far I have found that Saintonge should be green, Soissonais/crimson/rose, Bourbonnais/black, Royal Deux-Ponts/blue coat with bright yellow facings. I'm sure others who play this game have more info about the other French Regimental uniforms. Little touches like these really set a game apart. Just something to think about. I am so glad that you have made this lovely game. :hat:

It seems that the Limousin Regiment also had crimson/rose facings and the Bretagne Regiment had white facings.

Good post! I have not been paying attention as yet to the uniform colors (love playing the game :coeurs: too much!). Anyway, I should since I do paint military miniatures! Anyway...a good source of uniform colors I bought recently is the Lefferts book on the Uniforms of the War of the American Revolution.

Feel free to show all your suggestions with pictures for each unit.
I'm really not sure to have time to spend on it, but anyway, modders could be interested. ;)

Ok thank you. If and when I have the time I will see what I could do to make changes via modding and then list them somewhere. This is not to say I have spot additional incorrections...as it is I believe the icon/soldier portraits are very nicely drawn! :D

Fouche, that would be great since you have a reference to the French uniforms. Some will think it is a minor thing, but having the correct facing colors for the uniforms would really add some chrome; for me at least. I assume that Lafferts' book depicts the uniforms for all combatants. If possible, could you mod or make available the info for all/most of the relevent units? I'm afraid I am not much of a modder.

The information is readily available. French uniforms followed the Ordonnance of 1757.

See Page 10 "L'uniforme et les armes des soldats des Etats-Unis", L&F Funcken, Casterman Editions.

Or simply see The Seven Years War Website (http://www.militaryheritage.com/7yrswar.htm)
The page: http://www.warof1812.ca/charts/7warchtf.htm displays French distinctive colors, and http://www.warof1812.ca/charts/7warchtb.htm British details.

french uniforms 1779

Thu Mar 22, 2007 4:37 pm

hi everyone!,i am new in this forum and would like to share some of my knowledge in this thread,i am creating now a regiment of the french army thas was present a the battle of yorktown, they're 54mm and bought them from france, actually they are close to 60mm,the uniform is from 1767,so i did some modifications to it,like filing the turnbacks, change the position of the buttons on the pocket flaps and adding a small standing collar, basicly, the uniform went trough a series of modifications after 1767,wich is the "reglement de 1776"(short lived)and the final 1779,wich provided the basis for the uniform of the french army that will be the same design of the coat in later periods.
the first regiment that i am painting is the royal deux-ponts,wich helped the regiment de gatinois in the storming of the redoubt,i will try to attach a doc. with the specification so it will be much easier if some one is interested in uniform or painting historical miniatures.

french uniforms

well,i have tried to download a doc. that i have in my computer but is a little complicated to poste in the thread, anyways, the description of the royal deux-ponts is as follows:
hat:black felt, laced in black with a white cockade,to symbolize the alliance with the american troops,a black cockade was added on top of the white.
coat:dark sky blue.
collar:dark sky blue.
facing color:lemon yellow, applied at the cuffs, lapels and piping at the collar and pocket flaps.
turnbacks:white with lemon yellow fleur de lys(fusiliers),grenades(grenadiers),i believe that chasseurs had a hunting horn but it was of green color instead of the facin color.
waistcoat and breeches were white,or off white.
gaiters;white or black(both )
