How long do you normally spend on a turn?

It seems I take FOREVER to make sure I have everything right though I am a LOT quicker than I was when I was learning to play

My ritual is always to check out the log then go through it one line at a time and do anything that needs to be done (which can take forever), then I use the keyboard to cycle through each unit after I get a big picture look at the field and figure out what I want to send where pressing S after I made their move, I then go through order replacements and reinforcements and everything else in the Ledger.

I am just closing in on the end of the first year and things are slowing down a bit. I have been picking off raiders or forcing them to retreat a ton, only suffered a couple of minor defeats with some pretty big wins. Holding down all my cities fairly well and haven't yet encountered a large CSA force though I am sure it is out there somewhere but I haven't pushed on Richmond yet. I have been taking the easy targets.

If you haven't noticed I am addicted as hell to this game! LOVE IT though I spend so much time on planning my strategy and getting things just right I allow it to take up a lot of time. I can usually only get in one turn a sitting but then again I do have 3 kids ages 4, 3 and 1 that I am raising by myself so more than an hour at the computer and it looks like a tornado hit my house ;-)

I come at each turn in pretty much the same way as you do Guru. I normally spend between 20 - 40 minutes depending on the state of play and the season.

Just wanted to say I have finally found the large Army/Corps of the South and they handed to me :-/

I haven't mobilized at all but it is apparent that I need to! WOW.....Here I am crusing along, picking off easy cities, and I check out the objectives screen and see that CSA has a foriegn intervention score in the high 20's after only a few months, of course I got hammered on the Blockade and it back fired big time. Their morale is 110 while mine is a lowely 83. I have been kicking the crap out of their raiders and independant units. Looks like i am going to have to hurry up and put a push on to some major cities and pound on some of their large corps wondering my border

Are you saying you place each unit on Sentry that's eligable to move after you've moved them? Do you do a Ctrl-S to reactivate at the start of each turn?

If you move a unit, it will not be in the regualr cycle (E and R keys) until it is eligable to move again.

I do basically the same steps as above, work through the message log first, then E&R and T&Y, then go through the ledger pages. It can take 30 minutes to an hour on some turns.

Playing 1.06 still and I haven't had to press Ctrl-S at the beginning of the next turn, they are all back out of Sentry mode. As I am going through each unit on the current turn, when I am done with them I press S and thats it whether I move them or not. Once the next turn starts every unit that can move is available through the ER keys without having to press Ctrl-S

Once I have my strategy worked out for the turn, seeing were I need to send units, where I am going to advance on and all that it goes pretty quickly but that stage alone for me takes longer than 10 minutes

As with most large games, WITP for example - the first turn can be very daunting but after a few turns it all falls into place and things speed up (you even get a bit of a rest in winter turns).

after a couple of games think automatize more or less, plus if you play continually a game you actually allready know what you did do and plan last turn, so things cut down very much in complexity.
time needed is for the union slightly higher than for the CSA though

Right, the thing that kills me is that I always turn the game off after a turn and when I come back it is hard to remember everything that is going on and it takes me a little while to catch myself back up to speed. I will then come back and hour or 2 later get another turn in and do it again. One of these evenings I will be able to just play straight through for a few turns and things will probably go a lot smoother from on turn to the next.

The main army of CSA in the first year decided to launch an assault on my capital...wasn't the smartest thing in the world considering there are 3 corps around him and I was able to cut off his retreat ;-) Worked wonders for boosting my morale and lowering theres.

What in the world can I do to stop the ever raising foreign intervention scale from climbing? By this rate a couple years in I am going to be fighting the whole world.

There are hidden options available in Politics, Financials, and Drafts. Right click on the text for an option and it changes to another option.

The first and best foreign relations option for the Union is blockade. This is a good option and I always take it. Right click on this option and you can see commercial concessions and territorial concessions. These are desperate measures to prevent foreign interventions. I believe you can use all 3.

I usually save and quit right before I 'next turn'. Whenever I pick the game back up, run a turn and it helps remember the basics of what was going on. Started doing that for WitP.

Play with it disabled - I play CSA and I play with it disabled - dont want foreigners interfering in my blood bath!

Well it is no longer a problem, only in that one campaign fortunately. In my current campaign about mid 62 they are -29 or so....complete opposite of the last game.

I usually take about 40 to 60 min against the computer, but I usually like to double-check everything because it's very frustrating if you forgot to do sth. you had in mind and they f*ck you because of this. I dont like reloading as a rule, and it takes time to wait till the IA ends and start all again.
