How can I take a screenshot of the game?

Sorry for such a basic question. Can anyone clue me in?

I have used <shift> <prt scrn> but I can't tell if that worked, or where the image might be.

If you press the Print-Screen-Key the picture is copied to the clipboard. You can paste it then to the image editing tool of your choice (most basic would be Windows Paint).
A nice tool to make screenshots is also 'FastStone Capture' http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm
