Coastal artillery

Fri May 25, 2007 7:47 am

When you capture a port and some costal artillery in it and then get besieged by land forces of the enemy, does the coastal artillery unit fire at them or it only fires in direction of a harbor, at ships?
Thx

They only fire to the ships
This fixed coastal guns have an arrow like icon. Look at his tooltip.
If they dont have that icon they are regular guns and can fire anywhere.
Cheers!

Well, those Coastal guns in Annapolis have no arrow icon. Plus, they are not emplaced and you can move them to another region. What does "Coastal" in their name reffer to then? Range of weapons?

I believe you can move any type of artillery by rail or ship, I've certainly moved both types of "fixed" artillery that way.

What about coastal artillery in VA? Pretty soon after start of the game I can build coastal artillery in Georgia, but not in Virginia. Why? I checked Georgia, and in Fort Pulaski, near Savannah,GA there is Coastal artillery unit, which has Virginia as its state of origin. Does that mean that as soon as the unit gets bombarded my Coastal artillery pool in VA will be unlocked? It is December 1861 and I have constructed a fort in Norfolk and I still can't stuff it with coastal artillery form VA.

PS. VA in my game is the most heavily industrialised state in CSA.

Are you sure ?

I evacuated Fort Pickens last night, being obliged to let the fixed artillery behind.

They definitely fired at the assaulting troops before being overwhelmed, as the Reb did take casulaties.

... that the data was missing in AACW, coastal artilleries only fire on ships in BOA, but we forgot to add the parameter in AACW. oops, sorry, this will make in the next update though.

I have a question along these lines. I was playing the Union last night, and got attacked by the Norfolk forces up in Pennsylvania. Will this change also affect the "Heavvy Guns" of the forces the CSA gets when it takes Norfolk. They definitely need those particular guns locked into Norfolk, otherwise they have a very limited force down there. I ended up takeing Norfolk back with a bunch of militia, and have seen only a hodge podge force try to re-take it.

Technically, those heavy guns are siege guns and CSA should move them to the frontline, so I bet it will in your game. They would come handy in sieges of i.e Winchester or Harper Ferry. Just to let you know, there are no Coastal artillery units in Norfolk! They pop up in my reinforcement window early in my game as the CSA, but only for Georgia. Don't know why...

Very interesting. I was just wondering because when I played as the CSA I got the units stack from the assault of Norfolk. I figured the best place for them was Norfolk. I will try them as offensive units in my next game.

I thought it was funny that the AI moved them up into MD as a attacking force, especially since it was only the units you receive from the Norfolk assault. The funniest part had to be them going toe to toe with 2 18 element Union divisions. I know the AI had to see those because I had given the AI the FOW bonus and both divisions where on the front lines. Needless to say it did not turn out too well for the AI.

Absent modding, you can't build any coastal artillery in Virginia until your coastal batteries are destroyed down to a point where the units on the map are less than the amount in your force pool.

Does that mean that CSA capabilities of Heavy Guns pool (siege guns and costal guns) are capped initially at 23 units? Will this change with "conquering" new states or can be changed via more industrialisation in the initial states? BTW, which CSA states have the capability of producing Coastal guns? Can this information be checked in game or via the files?

Siege guns and coastal artillery are different unit models. Each of them has a cap. You can build siege guns in Virginia, Alabama, and Missouri. By the time your force pool hits its maximum in early July 1861, you should be able to build 4 units of siege guns in each of those 3 states.

By the time your force pool maxes out in July 1861, you should be able to build 6 coastal artillery units in the following states: Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama.

These builds assume that there are no on-map units of the same type in the force pool. If there are, then you have to subtract them from the forcepool since they have already been built for you.

One more question about coastal artillery. I captured two units of coastal artillery with Beauregard stack and dragged them around Maryland. Fought two battles in quick succession with two different Union stacks and noticed that I opened fire on them at the initial range of 3. The guns have a range of 9. Does that mean they don't take part in battles because they are two slow or something? Or maybe they don't fire in ground battles at all?
Thx

I don't think (pretty certain) coastal artillery participates in land combat.

That has been my experience as well. It doesn't participate.
