Cohesion and Hits Symbol

New to the game and forum...enjoying CWII...I played an early AGEOD game or two, years ago, but for whatever reason, they did not grab me...CWII has got my attention....it took me a few hours of rules, tutorial and youtube "study" to get a grasp on the game but I think the game is well worth the effort...

A quick Q, if I may: Regarding the post battle report (near the top of the report and before the unit details): The heart symbol is "hits" inflicted on the enemy, correct? The grid symbol is the cohesion hits on the enemy, correct?

Also - I notice a black diamond symbol with "1" inside the diamond under a city a icon...what does this mean?

Yes, with the box containing the Union commander are the icons for the Confederate hits (heart icon) and cohesion losses (grid icon) inflicted, and with the Confederate commander are the icons for the Union losses.

The number in the black diamond refers to the fort size in that region. You get a script to this effect if you cursor over the diamond.

Welcome to the forums. I'm fairly new to CW2 but have spent hours playing the campaign game and am hooked. My wife doesn't like me as much anymore but on the plus side, Grant and Sherman have reached Memphis by Sept 1862 and Banks had claimed the Indian territories as his own. Buell/Thomas sits in Nashville having pretty much defeated whatever army was there and is ready to move into Alabama or NW Georgia come spring.

Also, why do the battle post always end up with an even number. Also when you have a battle and the outcome is Confederate (300) (-300) and union (3000) (-0) Union Victory does this mean the confederates surrendered because I know the 300 men could get a few volleys off before they are all killed.

The game actually uses hit points, and not men. The men are added after the fact (to make it look better for us players), and as such, the men are calculated at the end, and there is an even number of men per hit point.

It could be that they all surrendered, or that they were all killed by cannons before getting into rifle range.

The "Winner" of a battle is the side which remained on the battlefield, while the other side has retreated.

This does not mean in any way that in human terms the remaining side was actually the winner. If, for example, you attack the CS in some region where they have a force of 20,000, with your force of 40,000 and you cause 5,000 casualties to the CS while incurring only 1,000, but you are forced to retreat from the battlefield; you side has lost the battle. But I'm sure you'd gladly lose a number of those battles
