To any treasure hunters out there this is a bit like an X marks the spot pirate map. 35 years ago myself and a friend used our metal detectors to find 15 Roman silver coins (denarii) about 200 meters to the west of this villa (up the hill, in and around the woods). No bronze coins at all so they can't have been random losses. When the archaeologists dug the site I believe they also found several silver coins in this area. At the same time we had a chat with a guy who lived near the field who told us he had found a Roman silver coin while digging his garden. Lastly - walking through those woods a few years ago I stopped to tell a chap with a detector this story while he was digging a hole. Guess what he found while I was chatting to him - yep a Roman silver coin. Most of the coins were in a 30 yard area but many trees in the way - we never found the mother lode. Strange thing is most of the coins were from the republican period. I did email an archaeologist a few years ago to let him know about this. He replied but I doubt it was followed up.

P.S. if there is a hoard it is to the west and not on the site of the villa itself (+ illegal to dig there).
I found the map via a Twitter post. If anyone out there of a certain age has dismissed Twitter as I did (don't care what Ricky Gervais had for breakfast) give it a go. If you follow people that have similar interests to you it is a very good site.
Good catch! It's like Google Maps but for the Legions...

What a fantastic map! Too bad I'm a barbarian living far outside the borders of the Empire, so there are no fabulous archaeological treasures buried close to my place that I could go looking for with the help of the map. The only thing the Romans ever wanted from these parts were furs.
