One of the screenshots, in Bishkek, shows a bear... so I guess you are in the right spot! 
This war is a nice opportunity for "involvement". But do you have a casus belli against the Russians? Are you planning to create one in roleplaying? Well, theoretically you should stay put given that it was Russia that declared war on China. Btw, the 80s China is supposed to be much more stable than the one in the 50s, the Taiping War must be over and the country relatively united. I expect them to be able to bounce the Russians in many instances, unless the Russians manage to bring in troops from Europe.

Now I'm curious as to where the bear is haha...I don't have a cb against Russia, they're our allies after all, and we have a 100 relation with them, it dropped a little with the beginning of the Pangermanismus, but they requested an audience and the "problem" was "solved". (I'm almost always roleplaying here haha...)by the way my general staff consider Warsaw und Riga as Objectives, so I feel an increasing internal pressure with the growing of the pangermanic movement inside our empire.
Just have to state that it's very easy to forge a casus beli with Bismarck still in office hahaha...we need more space to breath, Riga belongs to us!

in my game I had a Sino-Russian war that saw massive reversals of fortune, I think the Russians took Beijing but it ended with the Chinese on Lake Baikal

I had a meeting with Franz Joseph to discuss the current situation in Europe after we decided it was not desirable to have the russians in our alliance. I told him that I'm not happy with the russian attitude and that we need to strenghthen our ties in order to face the new challenges that might arise within the continent. He insisted that the italians are not trustable, and that they have no real commitment to our alliance and they still desire to take from his crown territories that are rightfully austrians, he even told me that Italy is just waiting for a good oportunity to do so..
