Black screen? (solved)

Fri Apr 27, 2007 9:55 pm

Hi
I have played both tutorials and the Shiloh scenario without any problems.
When I finally started the grand campaign my screen went black within a few minutes. A retry ended the same.
Error message: DirectX to Renderer invalid call (Burst Mode).
I have Vista Home Premium and Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS if that matters any.
I've searched and found that this happened to someone with BOA but the thread diden't offered a solution as far as I could tell.

Edit:
Ok, sorry. Seems like the old thread had the solution after all. Turning of the screensaver. Paniked there for a moment.

Well, that turned out to be false. It has happend again a couple of times. After 4-6 hours of play. I can live with that but it is annoying if it happens right before your about to press the next turn button :grr: after maybe 45 minutes carefull planning. I am very slow I guess but I just started and it's a lot to learn.

the thing to do first would be to sure that it comes from the screensaver... so can you disable it and have the game run for a long time? thanks.

I turned off the screensaver because that was suggested in the old thread. It didn't say if it worked or not.It seemed to work for me at first. The black screen happend again though, but not often.
I get a second message when it happens telling me that my screen do not "respond". Something about drivers. Maybe I look into it but I'm no expert and it would take time from playing :)

Oboy, this is to much. I started to play again a short while ago and now it was as when I first posted. Black screen within a couple of minutes. Second try, the same. I took a closer look at the second message. It said that a driver "routin" nvlddmkm.sys stopped answering. Located that within the Nvidia driver.
Went to their homepage and a new driver was available. Installed that one and tried again. Black screen within minutes. This time the screen went white shortly after and no error message came. It is still white as I write this(another comp) and the moving circle show that the machine try working but it seems to have stuck.

Another try. This time I didn't do anything for about 10 minutes. So far, so good. Then I started to manipulate some stacks and moved around a little. It worked fine.
Can it have something to do with the fact that I have both "Textures initialized" and "Regions Pre-caching" checked? If I do a lot right at the start it will cause some kind of conflict?
On the other hand, it has happened after several hours of play as well.
It's confusing, thats for sure.

Can you switch to the Omega Driver (either the ATI or NVidia one, depending of your card), but before uninstall your current driver to be sure. The following thread should give instructions about uninstalling and then getting the Omega driver:

I have Vista, I'm afraid and there is no Omega driver for that. I saw on the homepage that a Vista version for ATI was in the works. Couldn't see any mention of a Nvidia version.

ah Vista. You should have started by that ;)

We know of no workaround for Vista, when the driver don't works correctly with the game. On the other hand we are ok to refund players having Vista, until the demo is released, so that you don't have to pay for a game that don't works on your machine. Just send a mail at contact@ageod.com with a copy at support@ageod.com to do so.

Nvidia drivers for Vista will surely be updated very soon though.

Sorry for not being able to do more, when it is an hardware issue like this, there is nothing on our side that can fix the problem.

Just for the record:
I have Vista Home Premium and Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS if that matters any.

I did say it in my first post :siffle:
And refund is out of the question. Best spent money for me in a long time. The game is working ok again by the way. Guess I'll just have to live with a bit of unpredictable performance for the time being. I have a XP-machine that can run the game if necessary :coeurs:

yes indeed, sorry I forgot that.
Nvidia drivers are falling behind comparing to ATI for their Vista support, from several reading I had on the internet, so this is not a big surprise. But as months pass, I hope things will start to be more stable.
