PON Performance in a VM

Sun Jun 10, 2012 10:01 pm

Hello all - I've been interested in purchasing PoN for a bit, and decided to jump on a sale gamers gate had. I've been using macs for a while now so I bought the Mac port.

The performance is horrible. Really shocking how slow scrolling is. So, out of curiosity, I installed my copy of AACW in my install of Windows 7 on my mac, running Parallels Desktop. It flies. Faster than my old Win 7 machine was.

So, my question is: if I purchase PoN for Windows, anyone know how it will run under Parallels? Will it be faster than this "port" is?

Thanks!

Well, PoN was on sale on Steam so I decided to get it as well. Two purchases of Pride of nations for $10. Not to shabby.

And it gave me an opportunity to confirm my suspicions. The Windows version of the game runs significantly faster, in a virtual machine, than the so-called native version does on OSX. The port to the Mac, in other words, has some problems ;-D

Seriously, in the future, please don't bother porting the titles unless they're truly ready for prime time. It really tarnishes your reputation in my opinion.

Mac sucks for serious gaming anyway! :p

So, in other words, PON in VM is faster than PON native for Mac?

Most games that are ported to the Mac are ported by 3rd parties not the original developer, and are often noticeable behind on patches. It could be that the Mac version is 1.00 and the Windows is 1.02

There are a lot of titles that are ported by 3rd parties, and yes they can suck. Valve and Blizzard are two exceptions.

The game doesn't have the same load screen I've become accustomed to with AGEOD titles, so I didn't initially see the version number. On checking out the application (Get Info) it seems the version is indeed 1.0. That may explain the sluggish performance, and is very unfortunate overall. I've been a proponent of AACW since its release and don't like what seems to be one of the best developers getting tarnished reviews by a sub-par port of their game.

And yes the VM is much faster than the native version, which I think is also using some VM bits in it to make it run. It just does it slower than Parallels, which is very quick indeed for many titles.

Well, it seems no one is taking responsibility for the Mac version. I checked the credits and it's 1.01. The credits only mention Paradox and Ageod. A lot of their titles are done by virtual gaming and they are mum.

Phil - lets patch the Mac version! If you didn't do the port directly, can you at least get those who did to patch it up??

Yes, AACW for Mac is also stuck in version 1.15, but it plays fast.

It would be good to patch the oldies to the latest official patches...

We were not even aware that Paradox asked a company to port PON, sorry for your troubles.

Better to try another option it seems, also you'll always lag behind in patch and in quickfixes.
