Losing troops when marching

Fri Nov 04, 2011 12:00 am

Hey guys I have been having this problem for a while now and it makes the game extremly frustrating. When I have a large army and I order it to march, a lot of the men somehow disappear. An army of 45,000 becomes an army of 20,000 in just 4 turns. Why does this happen? It seems that if I do not travel by rail or by steamboat, men from my armies simply disappear, regardless of how large the army is. Why? =(

Hi NIkich103! :)

First of all, welcome to the fellowship. Enjoy your stay here.

Well, what you mention has an simple explanation. Obviously, if your troops move by train or steamboat you'll lose fewer troops. If your troops are walking, losses will be much greater. You must also take into account the terrain over which your men are moving. Check out this.

In addition, you probably have activated the second or the third box relating to Historical Attrition (In the game options, in the main menu, you'll see 4 tabs. In the 'Game' tab). Hover the mouse pointer over the boxes and read the tooltip that will emerge. Tick the first box.

Oversee the cohesion of your troops! It's very important. And let them rest to recover.

Here you have some very interesting links provided by Dixicrat :coeurs: that will be useful for you.

Regards! :hat:

Plus, they may be out of supply. Try marching with a Supply Unit that is fully loaded 80/80 (rest the cursor on the unit to see its status). If it's a big army, use two supply units. When you get 5 or more regions from your nearest Depot, expend a supply unit to build another one.

Are you losing cohesion (the purple bar) or actual unit size (the green bar)? If it's just the purple bar, stop moving for one turn, set the stack to Green/Green mode, and you'll recover cohesion faster. Of course, this isn't safe if near active enemy units.

There's a couple of short fixes to try. There are others of course.

Welcome to the forums!

Only if you want to eat and fight. Otherwise it's not that important. Oh wait the game is about winning a war. Well scratch that 1st part. ;)

I think this quote is attributed to Gen. Omar Bradley, although this isn't completely sure. :)

Yep, I had already seen that but if you look for Internet you'll see as it's also attributed to Gen. Omar Bradley. :)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if General Bradly originated it... but I'm a Navy vet, so I'll stick with the Marine. Go Navy!

Hm... To be honest, I do not see an attrition value in the game options. So the solution to my problem is giving my army more supplies and not marching them as much? I do have a few more questions. I understand that an army is divided into different corps which are then divided into divisions. I am wondering if it matters at all how big a division is and how big a corps is.

Hi NIkich103,

I recommend you take a look at this. :)

And regarding Historical Attrition option...

Divisions can contain up to 18 elements.
Corps are made up of divisions and units... they can be as large or as small as you'd like them to be, but half of the point to a Corp is so that you can make up large stacks of units which don't suffer command penalties.

Back when the earth was cooling (circa AD 1980), the USAF decided it was a good idea for me to get a degree in Logistics Management. So I have that stuff on the brain. This is my kind of game!
