Question in regards to bombardment

Mon Aug 30, 2010 10:48 pm

Hello, what do I need to make a fleet help my units in a neighbouring region in their battle through bombardment?

I am playing the 1755 scenario (French and Indian war), and my counterpart has taken one of the major ports in South Carolina. I've promptly assembled some units and a sizeable fleet and sent them into battle. The army retreated after sustaining several hundred casualties, but the fleet did not join the battle. I've repeated this once again, and the result was no different.

For the third time, I've decided to have both the fleet and the army adopt an all out attack stance, as I've thought that maybe the battle didn't last long enough. No luck. The battle lasted for six hours but the only result was that the British sustained even larger casualties and the ships still did not bombard my enemy. Yes, they were right in the adjancent region, blocking the port my enemy has decided to seize.

So, what do I need to do to make my ships assist my land units in a battle?

1. Only ships with range >=5 can bombard
2. Click on the "bombard" icon in the command panel (to the left of the units display panel)
3. Ships cannot be in passive posture. Otherwise posture/ROE doesn't matter.
4. Land forces must attack in an adjacent land region.

Yes, I used the Brit NA Fleet to bombard Ft Beausejour in 1755. They did offer minimal help, but it was Monckton's army, reinforced by Winslow's provincials from Boston, that took the fort.

Hmm interesting, maybe it's the range. I'll check and report back if that's not the case.

Well I am stumped. I just checked the fleet and there's Men-O'-War whose range is 5, which should be enough, right? They're supported by some lighter warships but that shouldn't be an issue, correct? Just as I've said earlier, the ships were not in a passive posture, and the land forces were attacking the adjacent land region.

The port I'm blockading is Charleston. Presently it's held by a rather sizeable French-Indian force which also managed to capture the fortress cannons undamaged.

Post your saved game and we'll take a look... :)

Thanks! It's a PBEM game and we've moved a bit ahead since when the problem appeared, hopefully this file should be relevant. If there's no ships, I'll upload an even older save.

I just had the same problem again. This time attacking Louisburg. I've disembarked my units upon the Island but the only cannons which intervened in the battle were coastal cannons belonging to the enemy.

Attaching a file, (no looking, Anzagar, please. ;) )

I hope this is the right file.

Both file sets are old past turns, and so almost useless

I did notice a fleet entering Louisbourg with "bombard n", but it was in passive posture....

Please send the file for the game turn (in the "top level" of your saved game), and Backup1.

Also, I notice you are running 1.07b. I will only be able to tell you if 1.08 RC4 solves the problem

Huh, latest turn and backup1? Is this correct? Or do you want me to find the turn when it happened and then backup1? I'm not sure what you mean.

First attached file contains all the files pertinent to the present turn, backup1, well, you asked for it.

So, when I load and restore previous turn (aka Backup1) I see a message that Saunders Fleet bombarded Armee de Drucour (located inside the fortress at Louisbourg). Clinton was besiegeing, and reverted to defensive, probably because he failed to remain an active leader. Clinton's initial posture orders were enough to trigger the fleet to bombard. WAD

I also see that Saunders then got defeated in a naval battle and retreated to Cansco passage.

The orders now are for Clinton to board Saunders fleet and sail to Halifax. Unfortunately, Clinton is not ordered to "move evasive" or to be in "passive posture", and so is unlikely to escape the Armee de Drucor and board ship. Additionally, Saunders Fleet is also no in "Evade move" orders, and will be vulnerable to interception by the French fleet..... WAD

So, it seems all is well, at least in 1.08 RC4 :)

Huh, weird, the fleet didn't show up anywhere in the combat resolution for me. Thanks for your time anyway.

Well, I am testing with 1.08 RC4, so the "randomizer" has a different seed, thus some battle results differ...

...regardless, it appears that Fleet Bombard, evasion, etc are working properly. :)

Thank you for you report, and thank you for playing WIA
