Gamersgate download doesn't work (solved!)

Sun Mar 14, 2010 3:15 pm

Hope someone can help me. I bought the game yesterday via Gamersgate. Download went fine, but the game just doesn't start.

First a dll file is missing, then after downloading the dll and placing it in the game folder, more error messages appear.

"TFileParser.PreLoad File not found"... several times in a row. Game starts to load but crashes somewhere in between.

Funny thing is, the demo worked perfectly.
I even tried a fresh download and install on my old laptop - no success either, exactly the same problem. One is a XP-SP3 and the other a Win7 - so very different hardware/software settings, but exactly the same errors.

I start to think it might be the gamersgate version. Anyone that can help me? Clues?

Cheers,
Brentor

Thanks for reposting it here, Brentor, I am sure someone from the tech team will take notice.

Where did you download the missing dll from ? And what dll was it ?

Thanks for thanking me :)

I really hope someone finds a solution here. The missing dll was d3dx81ab.dll. But there were quite some other weired things with the installation, no shortcut on the desktop or in "my programs", after entering the software key, a garbled confirmation window. The readme.rtf link automatically created pointing to file not existing etc.
Everything pointed to trouble, and trouble I had.

I read something about problems with sound/graphic drivers and such and tried the same procedure (download, installation) on my old XP laptop - exactly the same result... Even after applying the 1.15 patch. So I don't think it is some computer setting causing the trouble.

I wonder if many people have downloaded ACW from Gamersgate, as it is a rather old game...

Cheers,
Brentor

The .dll is included in the game installer but not in the patch

Hmm... Indeed, the problem sounds very much like the one I have...

Primasprit wrote:This might sound stupid now and I apologize in advance.... but you did not by any chance forgot to install the game itself before applying the patch? I can reproduce your problem 100%, but only if I install the patch only, and not the game. (The patch has a size about 110 MB, the game 470 MB.)

...if this really is the solution, I owe you guys a beer. :bonk:
But I am mighty sure I installed the game (automatic after the gamersgate download). But I will check tonight.

Thanks in advance!

Swell, it works now.

I am really embarrased. I actually did NOT install the game. pff.
With all the games so far, Gamersgate automatically installed the game. Not so with AACW, Gamersgate installs the installer... :-) It even says "the game is installed, click on the desktop icon". Well it never did that and I never checked before applying the patch. My bad. After installing the installer and actually starting the installer, everything works right now - on both computers!

My embarrassement would be limitless if not for the fact that it happend to others before.

Thanks for the great support!

Cheers,
Brentor
