Zooming in on map

Greetings from a first time poster.

So I finally entered the 21st century by moth balling my "Robert E. Lee Civil War General" in favor of the Ageod game. I'm as green as can be to this game but have one major concern that I have been unable to find a solution for, if in fact one exists at all.

I jumped into the game with the first tutorial which had two objectives: capture both Corinth and Memphis. OK I thought, we are talking Shiloh....cool! So I start the game and soon realise that I cannot zoom in on the map to a level of detail where you can see the locations of the actual battle. Is there no Shiloh Church, hornets nest location, or Purdy Road? When I get around to the Gettysburg battle, will the landmarks (both Round Tops, Cemetery Hill...etc) that make that battle unique also be left out?

I'm hoping that I missed something, but if the battle of Gettysburg is nothing more than dropping your armies on the city icon, I'll be pretty bummed.

Also I'd like to add that I am not attacking the game, quite the contrary actually. I'm thinking I did a very poor job in researching what the game does and doesn't do. I just assumed it would have the drill down map levels that my old Bobby Lee game did.

What you're thinking of sounds more like Forge of Freedom to me, they've got the "robert e lee civil war general" type battles. Just a different style of game here. Keep with it though, you may like it despite not being able to fight each one of your battles individually

Hi!!

No, the game has not tactical battles. Its an strategic/operational level game, not a tactical one like the great Civil Wr Generals
So you play on a huge map of teh whole USA and can control all the armies ans navies of the CSA or USA, as well as recruitment, economic and political choices... There is and awful lot to do!
But battles are resolved automatically by a sophisticated battle engine. You cannot fight them tactically.
Your work here is on a bigger scale: to plan and execute campaigns, recruit and organize armies... not to command the troops at battle level.

It may be different from what you expected, but i assure you its an awesome game!

I really think you got the wrong game if you were expecting something like that...

Like Gray have just said, this is a strategic game, not a tactical game like the Total War series.

Anyway, I think you should give the game a chance, it is a different scale than the one you wanted, but that doesn't mean that it is not fun at all to play it.
You have a lot of options to recreate history from another point of view, without having that level of detail on the battles that you were expecting.

Wow thanks for the quick replies. As I suspected it was my inability to properly evaluate the games intentions. No biggie, I will definitely keep playing it as it does seem to possess qualities that I can grow to love.

It does kinda underscore the fact that there are a lot of helpful individuals quite willing to step in and answer questions for the newcomers.

Haha, I moved straight from RE Lee's Civil War Generals 2 to this game as well. They're two different games but I love them both. I still play both sometimes but I play AACW alot more now.
