Looking for PBEM process guide

Mon Aug 17, 2009 4:31 pm

I am new to PBEM, and am a bit unclear on the process details.

I seem to remember an earlier thread post on the details around PBEM steps (setting up the game, saving, transferring files, execution). I have searched the forum and wiki today without success. Can anyone point me to a good guide?

Many thanks,

-D

Yes this is very helpful; it confirms we are following the basic steps. Unfortunately, my opponent and I are new at this, and it is still not functioning properly. Is there a troubleshooting guide / thread for this topic?

Many thanks,

-D

Yeah, being more specific could enhance solving your problem :)

If you have problem with opening files in the game menu, you can also try zip-ing or rar-ing the trn and ord files before sending them to your opponent. I once missed it and then my opponent could not load the file.

OK ... I, too, have experienced problems in my one and only attempt at a PBEM game. Host could not open the file I sent. It was zipped. We tried twice. I do use Vista ... Windows 7, actually. I couldn't go into more details, as I couldn't see the error results.

But, my main question is: What settings do you need to have? Do both playes need to have their games set exactly the same, or does only the host's settings matter? Should the AI be turned off? What if you are also playing solitaire? Do you need two installations if your settings arte different?

OK ... that is 5 questions. I have no clue about PBEM.

Hi Rich, I could open the file OK, it was when I was in the game, the CSA and USA save game files had the paperclips next to them, but when I clicked the save game a critical error box popped up and the game quit to the desktop, its a shame because I'm sure Richfed would have given me a good game :)

You don't need to have two versions installed- just have to adjust your options screen between each time you start a new session with that game. For your AI game you would keep that box ticked. For your PBEM game you would uncheck it. Same with the other options- just change them to your setting for the game you are about to start.

Just to make sure I understand - I've got AACW installed, I start two PBEM games. Game A uses normal Foreign Intervention and standard generals stats. We're playing Game B with easy FI and randomized generals.

For this to work properly, I do a turn with Game A using those settings in the game options window. When it comes time to do a turn with Game B, I start AACW, open options and change FI and randomized stats, then load the Game B scenario file, finish the turn and send it to my opponent.

Next time I want to do a turn for Game A, I start AACW, go to options and change them back, load the scenario, do turn etc.

Have I got that right?

What happens if I forget to change the options for a turn? Is that turn processed with the other game's option settings? Will it screw up the savegame if I switch back later? Crash the program? Unleash ragnarok?
