Attacking Ships/Rivercraft with Coastal Guns

Fri Mar 13, 2009 8:42 pm

Does a fort's posture need to be offensive in order for the coastal artillery to initiate attacks against ships/riverboats that move into an adjacent sea/river area? And, if so, does that mean that they do not get the advantages of the fort?

Situation, I have a coastal artillery unit at full strength in Island No. 10 with a defensive posture. Union Admiral Foote with several riverboats and ironclads moved into Reel Lake. My artillery appears to not even have tried to shoot at the Union force. Meanwhile, my own floatilla there got wacked. :crying:

No, posture does not matter.
Its a different system, not a regular combat.
The fort protects the "links between the two river regiosn where its situated and will fire on ships that try to pass thought this link.
Mabye tha acces link to Reel lake is not the one the fort protects, but will surely shoot if Foote tries to go south of it.
Another possibility is that Foote passed an evade fort roll. Its not easy to do but can happen.
Regards!

May I assume that this holds true for blockading ships as well? If they anchor in a coastal zone that allows them to blockade a harbor, but is also adjacent to a fort, the fort will not fire on them as long as they don't pass the fort? If so, I've been needlessly afraid of blockading some harbors. Does the fleet need to be in the avoid combat stance -I forget the exact term.

Will the fort fire on the fleet if it leaves the coastal zone by leaving the zone via the way it entered?

Really glad you guys have the patience for us noobs and our endless questions. :)
