Install problems and doesn't startup...

Tue Feb 03, 2009 4:42 am

When I go to install AGEOD (after a recent format and reinstall of Vista 64-bit) the installer freezes and I'm forced to end the process when it reaches the "Finishing Installation" stage. It seems to install properly, but when I tried to patch it I get an error message saying the patcher is trying to delete AGESettings.exe and is denied access (permissions issue apparently). So, to fix that I restart my machine to fix Windows annoying behavior of screwing up permissions as I've encountered in the past, delete the exe file when it starts back up, then go and patch it again, which seems to work. However, when I startup at that point, the game freezes on the initial splash screen.

First uninstall the game completely, next see post #7 of this thread: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=11319&highlight=Program+Files

Notice that I suggest removing Program Files from the default installation path. This usually fixes Vista problems though yours is the first Vista 64 question I've come across, but I'm betting it's the same issue.

After you've installed the initial setup file, you can install the latest update patch and it should default to the changed path you edited above but if not, be sure to edit it also.

Please let us know if it fixes the issue. Regards.

Actually I put all my games on a seperate partition (D:\Games) so I've already got that covered. I tried uninstalling it twice, restarting, and reinstalling already.

Hi nessin!

Please make sure you entered your serial number correctly.
Close all unneeded software before running AACW.
Run the game explicitly as administrator: Right-click on the AACW icon --> "Run as Administrator".

Hope this will help. :cwboy:

Nope. I run everything as administrator (I hate UAC, turn it off and just make my primary account an admin since I keep all my sensitive stuff encrypted elsewhere). After three installs, and three attempts at putting in my serial number, still no go.

I tried running the game before the patch, and instead of it just freezing up on me, I get an error message that says "TTerrainDefs.Get Terrain UID 32 too high" followed by "TTerrrainDefs.Create: You must define one terain as the beach battleground." (And a few more like that such as "Fort" or "City" battleground) But considering this is the original version released through Matrix Games, I imagine that isn't worth much.

Edit:
Also, the game worked fine on my previous installation of Vista 64-bit. The only change I made was I went to the ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard and the Intel Core i7 920 processor, with all fresh new drivers as of last weekend.

Also, tried installing it to a different location, but no dice, have the same issue (installer freezes, and I get a black screen with ACW 2.0 in the lower left corner and it freezes there when I run it)

Also tried ignoring the error message about not being able to over-write AGEsettings.exe, at which point I can try and open up ACW and flat out nothing happens other than AACW.exe and AGESettings.exe process showing up in my process list.

on which drive are you installing the game? The message you report is saying you are missing most if not all the game data files after the installation.

I don't know exactly what should be in the ACW directory, but it looks all there as far as I can tell. And I'm using the same installer I used when I installed a couple of weeks ago before I got my new motherboard/processor, and the same installer I've used in the past. The only new progress I've made is I tried running the AACW.exe file in compatability mode (XP SP2) and instead of getting the blank screen with "AGE 2.0" on the bottm, I get the same black background with AGE 2.0 text, only the center has an AGE logo on it, still freezes though.

Its got to be something between my installer and Vista. Whatever the installer tries to do at the very end causes the installer to crash.

When it happens that the installer freezes at the end of the installation, it's important to close the installer not via the "Cancel" button. It must be closed with the "Close" button of the window or via the task manager. Otherwise the installation might be corrupted.

Its a complete freeze of the process. The only way I can close the window is to open my task manager and kill the process, then wait for the message to come up asking me to forcibly end the process since windows couldn't close it gracefully.
