Possible AI improvement suggestion

Wed Oct 29, 2008 12:04 am

I don't know this for sure, but after several games against the AI now I have the sense that it's suffering from one problem: It seems to be overactive...

I know that one of the things that I try to do for my side is to gain and foster entrenchments. Move offensively, fight battles defensively. It works.
The AI though tends to move entire stacks, leaving nothing in strategic reserve, and therefore giving up any entrenchment advantages that it might gain. I can regularly take advantage of it by using pairs of Corp, one smaller one in defense and one to move to an opening. Works every time, as long as I'm patient about my goals.

I agree. I just completed a campaign as the Union with the AI as the CSA. I won in July 1863. The AI was consistently overly-agressive. It sent several Corps into Pennsylvania which I was able to isolate and starve to death. The result was that I was able to launch a major offensive into Virginia in the spring of 1863 without any opposition, capturing Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, and Richmond in rapid succession. It also sent Army sized units to oppose my attacks against the forts in North Carolina, which I effectively tied up with one division. By that time the CSA had also suffered 30,000 more casualties in combat than I had - mostly in ineffective attacks against my entrenched units (not including the number of casualties that they had wasted in starvation raids into the north).

[1.10c]
- fixed: a bug which prevented gunboat blockades (of rivers) to works correctly under some circumstances. Number needed is moddable.
- changed: Ships don't have to be in offensive posture to block rivers.
- changed: Map rework, courtesy of Gray_Lensman
- changed: Because of low-level cleaning, the AI thinnk *differently*, for good or bad. Don't hesitate to report of the new behaviors seen.
- improved: The AI garrisons more and stay put more often when moves are not needed.
- improved: RailRepair algorithm, supply unit algorithm

Whatever was done there... increase it.

AI restlessness ... a common problem in many AIs :)
