Septimius Severus Victory Conditions

Having gotten back into AJE recently, I just finished playing Septimius Severus, eking out a minor victory.

Does anybody know if it's possible to decisively knock either Clodius or Pescennius out of contention, i.e., annex them? Does this happen if they are physically killed? (would explain why the AI was hiding Pescennius in Ctesiphon and Clodius in Britain after things went south for them)

Also, it appears in real life Pescennius lost support in Egypt and elsewhere rather early - is this modeled in the scenario?

I have never played versus AI, but in pbem play it is very possible to knock both out of contention.
