Generals' Strategic Rating Decreasing

Sun Feb 13, 2011 8:03 am

This is still in regards to my Union PBEM game.

I have noticed at least two of my Union generals have had their Strategic Rating (at least, maybe others) fluctuate during the game. None of them have been promoted or had anything else significant change. Right now William b. Franklin, who is in charge of a Union Corps and is supposed to be 3-1-1, is currently 1-1-1. I noticed the same thing with A. Whipple; in fact Franklin took command of the Corps because I noticed Whipple's Strat. Rating was only 1.

What am I missing here? What causes generals' ratings (specifically their Strat.) to decrease?

Corps generals stats are influenced by Army general stats. If you have a good Army of the Potomac commander (Grant for example), stats of subordinate corp leaders will rise. If you have poor general (McClellan for example), strategic rating of corp commanders will plummet.
If a Army commander strategic rating is 3, there will be no change in strategic rating stats of corp commanders.
More, and you have a chance of corp commanders having better stats on a given turn. Talking from experience, it is quite common for corp within McClellan army to have strategic rating 1.

Defense and Offense rating of corp can only be better under the influence of Army general, there can be no negative effect.

Command-style is infectious. Your corps commanders' poor ratings reflect their army commander, McClellan. The bonus (or malus) given by the army commander to his corps commanders is determined by a different die roll each turn for each corps; that's why it seems to fluctuate from turn to turn. I agree it can be confusing, as the corps commander tooltips will only show his modified ratings. However, the tooltip for the corps badge will tell you what the modifiers are, and you can use these to infer his baseline ratings.

Moral of the story: a lot of the Union's 3-stars perform better as corps commanders under someone with cajones.

On a side note I see a generals ratings drop way down when you give him a divisional command which kinda sux.

A (*) star General with a 4-3-1 drops to a 2-1-0 and then when you stack him with a Strat 4 (**) star General who is not a corp commander, but is also a Division Commander it drops even further to a 0-0-0.

This of course comes into play mostly in the beginning before you can use corp commanders.

That's a one-turn hit to his ratings for forming a division; his stats should return to normal next turn.

Also, when you first appoint, don't freak when you see Hooker go from 442 to 110 the same Turn you made him a Division commander. This is WAD. It takes at least one Turn for the newly appointed Divisonal, Corps, and maybe even Army commander to "get used to the job". The ratings bounce back quickly.

Most probably put in to slow players down from SuperGenl promotions and then, the same Turn, saving the day miraculously,

There's a similar penalty for redeployment. Sometimes it's best to do them both at once, and get the (combined) penalties over with in one turn. Also, if you can spare the generals, it's best to have your divisional commanders no also stack commanders, because they only get the unit leader bonus.

Yes, through battlefield promotions and other ways, you can have a Corps commander pushed to the right and a Div commander be at the leftmost place. In that case, I bite the bullet, bust up the Div in question, redistribute the loose Bdes, and redesignate the new guy as Corps commander.

Indeed. Because of the dufference between stack leader and unit leader combat bonuses, you want the stack leader to be the one with the best ratings.
