I agree with those of you who believe that Lee would not have left Virginia to command an army in the west. As was probably pointed out before he declined overall command of the Union forces because he couldn't stomach the thought of fighting against Virginia.

As another thought that is not exactly on point.....it is well known that Longstreet wanted to shift around the Union position at Gettysburg to get between the AoP abd Washington. Any speculation on how that might have changed things? There are so many "ifs" that is difficult to answer a question like that which is what makes history fun!

Lee would never have gone west? He had habit of sending those Generals he did not like or did not rate out west.
It was Lee that altered Davis thinking on Vicksburg. However moving an entire Corps from Virginia would not have gone unseen by Federals. Could Longstreet have held with a severly depleted ANV.
Beauregard in my opinion would have made a better Commander in west than AS Johnstone or most of the others who did an abysmal job of it.
Losing Donnelson was a catastrohy - I speculate that Beauregard would have held it or at least held it longer than happenned in reality?
