Foreign Intervention

Sat Aug 23, 2008 1:00 am

I just triggered 'Foreign Intervention' for my first time, playing as the CSA, Fall 1862.

QUESTION: am I supposed to be able to attack Mexico City? The French won't move there and neither will the CSA.

The CSA gets a British 'Army' in Canada (about two Divisions), a British Army in England (powerful Army plus two Corps), a British Fleet, a French Army in Mexico (about two Divisions), and a French Fleet. The USA gets a Mexican Army under Diaz.

So, the US immediately attacked Manassas and lost almost 200,000 troops (compared to my entrenched 75,000 losses). I've still got Manassas but have not much AotP left, but then, neither does the US.

And for some odd reason, Diaz and the Mexican Army decided to help the US put down the Sioux Insurrection; now they're somewhere around California (main force) and Kansas (cavalry?). The Mexicans also split off what is now an amphibious force that is off the coast of TX / LA.

My Canadians are stalled after taking Detroit MI and Plattsburg NY, my Brits are resting after taking Boston and New York. My French are besieging Chihuahua. The US Navy is in trouble (in addition to the Foreign fleets, I have Fort Monroe, with an additional Coastal Artillery unit in a Division commanded by Huger the Artilleryman - they pound any ships trying to enter or leave the Chesapeake).

I thought that the game would pretty much be over, but the US National Morale was actually increasing (until the US lost its Army).

I think Mexico City remains terra prohibeo.

You have to get your NM win all at once. The increase is automatic until NM reaches 100.

Tell us how you triggered it. What event pushed it over the top?

Dug in and behind a river with good command and plenty of arty you can hold 3-1 odds.

About 2.5 times the average losses in the Somme Offensive over a two-week period and about 12 times the casualties at Antietam/Sharpsburg.

Yikes.

Can you post a save? This could make a good alternate test for the beta team, as they look for solutions to extremely high casualty issues.

What triggered Foreign Intervention? I got lucky on the CSA Embargo and the USA Blockade...

It didn't take long for the CSA to win after the Intervention, but the USA kept playing after Washington fell. I got the Victory screen after the battle of Baltimore (the last USA fleet was destroyed that same turn - Fort Monroe with 4 coastal guns plus British and French fleets). BTW, A combined USA / Mexican Army ending up destroying my Canadian Army and taking much of Upper Canada.

About Manassas - The losses weren't all on one turn; the USA attacked and that Army sat there for about 4 turns. I started with the Beauregard Army of the Potomac (pwr 800), plus J. Johnson Corps (pwr 1400) and Lee Corps (pwr 1600), plus a small Division-sized garrison of commanded brigades inside Manassas. The USA kept reinforcing and I kept feeding in more men (EVERYBODY who wasn't locked, from as far South as Charleston SC). Eventually the USA started losing units, then lost almost all of them. The CSA lost several units too. Both sides lost several Generals. Latecomers kept wandering into the battle, too - the USA lost about 5 Cavalry units for a few turns after he lost his Army.

That's ok, after reading your explanation, it wasn't the situation I thought it was.

I didn't see it as unusual, just exciting!

It would have been tough to recover from the loss of almost every unit East of the Appalachians, as it turned out I had to rebuild the Army of the Potomac (lost lots of infantry units) before moving on Washington.
