1997 Empire's The Civil War

Sun Jul 27, 2008 4:41 am

What we wish for in a stategical/tactical came has been tried and failed. Back in 1997 Empire Interactive came out with a game designed by Steven Green,"The Civil War". The tactical was simular to TW 3d tactical but using 2d stick figures . For the time it was a wonderful game. I ran it on an old PacBell. I enjoyed hours of fun. Later interest in it stopped when Civil War General came out.

Control at that scale would be insane. That would mean giving orders for hundreds of regiment per turn. Plus, you would have to slow down the game to maybe a turn per day in order for it to make sense.

365 days per year * 4 years from April 1861 to April 1865 * 300 or units to give commands per turn = 438,000 commands. Even if it took 1 minute to give orders for each unit(which I consider pretty generous), your talking about 122 hours to complete the game.

I did beta testing on a Sid Meiers Civil War game--Gettysburg, I think. Unrealistic micromanagement for the role the player is in.

You don't give orders to the individual regiments now, and you wouldn't then, it would just be played out at that scale to observe and enjoy. Of course the Host phase would have to take in more of the individual units' tactical positioning then it currently abstract, otherwise it would not be worth the effort to take the game down to that scale.

Lensman you are right. I would love to see the battle fought out in atleast
2D with Nato symbols and just watch the battle unfold. There is a space building empire game, I forget the name , that allows you to build fleets of ships and send them into combat. You have no control of the combat but you do see a screen where the battle is fought out and you can watch your fleet win or lose in battle.

If I want to micro_manage a battle I have TW games for that.

Galactic Civilizations - sometimes it was cool to watch the battles play out.
