Odd location for ship building

Thu Jun 12, 2008 6:36 am

I just laid down a CSA ocean-going transport -- see how many WS he can haul back before the Yankees blow him up. Imagine my surprise to find that the CSA navy dept. had contracted for him to be built in Muscle Shoals (Tuscumbria AL). Not a really useful place for him since I think he will not be able to enter any river areas and so will spend the remainder of his worthless, 6 WS, life in Tuscumbria. Good news for the crew, though. Much nicer to go swimming at Muscle Shoals than to brave the US Navy on the high seas. :grr:

In a somewhat less frustrating but still unusual move, in the last game I played the USA navy office built a monitor in Pittsburgh.

In both cases, shouldn't there be some way to stop ocean-going ships from being built at inland cities?

We could create some new areas in the areas.ini file, just for shipbuilding. The root problem is that shipbuilding locations use some of the current areas, which I doubt were really designed with that specific purpose in mind.

DK - If you think an ocean transport in Muscle Shoals is bad, imagine my mortification on discovering that I was using my carefully hoarded WS to build the CSS Fredericksburg in Hampton Roads in one game.

This includes Morehead City (instead of Moorehead City), and Smithville (instead of South Port). Smithville also involved changing the Militia Garrison name to match.

These name changes were verified against the names and data in "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War"

 All those names have bugged me at one time or another.

Did you try moving transport yet? I am curious to see if you could make it to sea before getting sunk that is? I have had riverine transports built on coast at Galveston and tried to send it up Missippi - it got sunk by Yanks on the way - not well pleased but then it was an odd place for a riverine transport to get built I thought?
