What is the best and most efficent way to get 400+ strength/cohesion union divisions?

A great leader (Grant, Sherman, Hancock, etc.), four big rifled guns, a big elite unit, fill in the rest with the best of your line brigades that have no artillery, some rest, and a training officer in the same stack. Put it all together, and 600+ should be no problem.

For me a standard division consists of the following:

1 leader
1 Sharpshooter
1 Cavalry
4 Artillery
11 Infantry

There are situations when some elements should be adjusted or removed completely with others added IMO.

As Jabber has said above, if you make sure that one of the brigades in the above recipe is an elite, you will have the perfect division.

If independent, add 1 marine-type unit to the troop and crossing rivers would be a joke. (1/Stack can do the job)

Remember also to add a Supply Wagon to the stack!

You receive elite units by event. The elite units have a yellow flag with black crosses. An early example for the union is the California Brigade.

say Le...why not more elite southern divisions as I was asking Jab one time...I would contend that many southern brigades were easily the equivalent of the iron-Brig (the most famous northern brigade)....Rhode's, Early's, Armistead's to mention some.

Yeah, I agree, there are alot of crack units they missed.

Oh yeah they are in there.
I was thinking more of Law's Alabama Brigade. 4th, 15th, 44th, 47th, and 48th Alabama regiments. Or the Mississippi Brigade, 13th, 17th, 18th, and 21st Mississiippi regiments. These were crack outfits and if they aren't counted as 'elite' I don't know what should be.

It would be so nice if we could handle the elements and decide what elements go into each unit.

swap an element from one unit to send to another unit, for example would do the trick to form divs with the elements we want.

I think the Louisiana Tigers are included. Another Southern elite unit is the Orphan's Brigade. I'm not sure if the Stonewall brigade is rated as elite. I don't know of any others. BTW the Marines are considered elite as well as far as I know.

The Union gets a lot more elite units. On the other hand the South gets its super brigades (the Virginians and Tenessee) which if recruited in the first year or so of the war can get enough experience to become unbeatable. Especially with the new patches a few experienced Southern divisions under competent leadership easily rout the large, ineptly led Union forces with relative ease.
