The AGEod story...

Thu Dec 06, 2007 3:59 pm

Hi,

I have come across several posts asking why NCP did not offer a Grand campaign, why ACW was more complex than BoA, why BoA did not offer a proper recruitment system.

It occured to me that what appears as natural to us, because we know the AGE engine and its evolutions, the AGEod development plans, etc. obviously looked more obscure to a part of our community.

So I thought I could post here a work done by Markshot, our US team member (with few changes by me). This is a draft version but it can give you a better understanding of how the AGE engine is designed:

AGE v1: AGEOD's Generals at War (Great Battles series) --- AGEOD GBS

This serie focuses on the wars which shaped our world. This is your chance to take charge of a key battle upon which the future of the world pivoted. Can you handle the pressure of command? All the military resources you need have already been provided. You are exactly in the same position than your historical alter-ego, with the same amount of information and operationnal control. March, countermarch, supply your troops and cut the ennemy lines. You have but one duty and that is too fight and win! What are your orders?
ie: Birth of America, Napoleon's Campaigns, Birth of America 2

AGE v2: AGEOD's Commander in Chiefs (Nations at War series) --- AGEOD NWS

This serie focuses on leadership during times of war. You will need to guide your nation to victory, but military expertise alone will not be enough. You will need to decide on national policies in order to keep the engine and machinery of war maintained and running smoothly and sustain the morale of your nation. Neglect the front, and you'll be invaded. Neglect the rear, and you will be forced to meet the enemy with poor moral and ammo. Can you balance wartime leadership with the forward thinking needed to see the fight through to the bitter end?
ie: AGEod's American Civil War

AGE v3: AGEOD's World Leaders (global politics series) --- AGEOD GPS

This series will be much broader than a simple wargame. To build and nurture a nation one must be much more than simply a General. You will have to set the national and international agenda. Will you focus on research and bring about a renaissance, or will you focus on industrialization and build an economic powerhouse that leads the world's markets in production of goods?
Will you prepare your people to defend their freedom from hideous power hungry despots, or will you prepare your people to seek their righteous place in a new world order shaped by the power of your factories and the force of your arms? Because War is only the continuation of war by other ways, be prepared to face the greatest generals, diplomats and political leaders.
ie: Vainglory of Nations, Napoleon's Campaigns 2

Next time, I will try to tell you the AGEod inside story. From the meeting between Philippe Malacher and Philippe Thibaut till now, you'll understand the team's dreams, hopes, constraints and fears. How and why we develop version 1, 2 or 3 games.

Very interesting! I'm looking forward to the company's story. I'd especially like to hear about design philosophy, approach to modeling history, and other "theoretical" issues.

I think I will wait until the movie comes out and not read the book. Who do you think they will get and to play the Phils? Most importantly someone with lots of box office appeal will be needed to play Sandra Duval.

I don't want to spoil the story Korrigan is going to tell, but for those who always flip to the last page, everyone becomes rich and famous in the end. It's truly a charmed story, since in this one even the volunteer beta team members quit their mundane jobs and move to France's equivalent of Silicon Valley, drive sports cars, do nerdy things, and count their stock options.

The final scene takes place around the AGE Studio's indoor pool as the staff discusses whether it would be better to acquire UBI or EA in order to staff up for developing even more games. (MarkShot recommends that we should not think small and suggests a buy out of SONY.) A long journey from a single Web site confusing Americans in French with VAT to buy BOA to being on top the big game! :)

Wow! I look forward to this part!!! :innocent:

But yeah, the early story of the company is interesting. AGEod was and, by far, still is a start up.

I think maybe we could start a poll.
I vote for Ian Mckellen or maybe Anthony Hopkins for the part of PhilTib (we definitelly need a character with some "dignity" here)
and maybe Viggo Mortensen or Daniel Craig for Pocus role
Now, for Sandra, what about Cate Blanchet ?

The difficult decision would be Korrigan - how about Andy Serkis ?? :sourcil:

Sure, every great movie needs a romantic sub-plot... :niark:

Just you or is everyone secretly in love with her?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Once the Studio has done its first billion dollars in sales, you will have no trouble getting dates and there will be lots of Sandras looking to meet you. :)
