Naval assualt bug (?) when unloading from transports?

Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:33 pm

In 2 games, both PBEM, I have assaulted Island 10 by moving a fleet of ironclads and transports with about 10-15K men on board. I stop in the river section that runs alongside Island 10, disembark with my units by moving them to Island 10 which are active and in assault stance, next turn my river fleet is of course shot up but my assaulting force is moved to the nearest Union region with full cohesion, not a shot fired and not a man lost. Last time it was Sherman and he got magically transported all the way back to Paducah which actually saved it as Grant was assualting south and an undermanned CSA force ran right into the now strong Federal force that transported from their assault down river.

It has happened to me on Fort Donnalson & Henry as well with the exact same thing happening. I had to take both by marching my men across the river. From my 3 experiences with this "bug" it has only happened in situations where there were fort batterys involved and limited landing room on the map. I can assault larger, river adjacent regions all day with great success, not sure what the problem is with doing it above.

Could be that the power of the forts makes landing directly on the forts impossible, meaning why your forces are being directed to adjacent territories. Everything that I have read about shows that troops were landed nearby, then marched to the forts.

This does not mean that there isn't a bug however, but it might explain the redirection of your forces. Are they being placed in Lake, TN region?

In the turn that I unload them to assault from the river it gives the typical 5 day march, not sure what the actual destination was listed as. They are just separated from the transports and listed as a separate tab like normal and after the turn resolution it was as though it never happened and are in the closest Union region.

Quite possible but in game it needs to disallow the movement in some form other than instantly transporting the force about 20 days march through the mud with full cohesion and strength. It worked out nicely in my one game since an unsuspecting force ran right into it after thinking they were marching on a militia guarded city.

I'm unsure about what is at hand here. Lake, TN is a swamp region, but there is nothing special about it and the positionning of a fort in the region... I would need a saved game with the turn before and after the landing to see.
