Generals loosing abilities

Hello from France !

I am quite new to the game (only started one game with the CSA and played a few turns).

That all looks very great.
I however have several questions about unclear points.

One is the following : I understand some generals lose their abilities when they are promoted, and this is described in the generals listing but I also noted that some generals also do when you make them division commanders and I find no easy way to assess if and how a general will be affected by this decision.
Since you have to "pay" for it, it doesn't seem acceptable to try and see what happens, except if it is a deliberate choice and a random effect (in that case, it is fun, but if not and scripted, then it is a lack of information).

I also believed only 2-star generals could lead a division, but notice some 1-star also are entitled to.

Thanks for any clarification.

You should have a look at the "Leader's list" wich give you the consequence of promoting a general, with the good and bad points. This will prevent a bad choice without too much experiment !

I think this option is very interesting because a general good enough to lead a brigade could be overwhelmed by the leading of a larger troop. A good example of that is Hood who's great leader skills in commandind brigade and division goes to ground when commanding an entire army, not the same job.

I do have this list, but unless I'm wrong it only relates effects of promotion in terms of "stars" but not what happens when I choose to have a General leading a Division without "promotion" in terms of the game.

I'd have to browse through my game, which I can't for the moment, but I had twice the case with early CSA generals (one *, and one **) that saw their abilities decreasing from, say, 3-1-1 to 2-0-0 when made division commanders.

NB : As far as I remember, these generals were alone with their troops in a pile

Ah, that's probably the command penalty they get right after they become division commanders (for one round?); it's part of the cost you pay for e.g. switching division commanders and represent that the new commander needs some time to get his command up to standards (or something like that :) )
