What do the Engineers Do?

What do the Naval Engineers, and just regular Engineers do? Other than with sieges.

Engineers: speed up entrenchment and railroad repairs

Well, if they're like my stepfather, they tell you they have a better system for something than what you're employing/using. A way they 'like to do things'.

Back on topic - naval engineers speed up construction and repair of naval vessels. I am not sure, but think regular engineers help in siege prep, fortification construction, and repairing RRs. Not sure about any of that, though.

Except the stepfather part - that I know. Engineers - well, it takes all kinds....
