I just trained up some Union Colored Militia using Sigel's training skill. However the icons for heretofore black troops now depict white troops! Apparently while the game provides for a wide and pleasingly historical variety of units, when they get upgraded there is a default graphic for everyone. It is a small thing but quite jarring. Can the black militia troops get their own icon as they get trained up? I am sure the current icon for non-militia black Union troops can be used. But as I am not a modder I don't want to mess with the game files.
It would be great if this can be teed up for the next patch.
Also, in the meantime, if someone who knows how can tell me, I can do a quick fix. I would guess it just involves copying and renaming a graphic file and moving it to the correct folder?
I think that Colored Militia are model mdl_USA_Mil2 (Unit ID 230) (possibly they are mdl_USA_Mil7, both need to change anyway, and I explain both fixes). For the graphics to work right, they should upgrade to mdl_USA_Inf7 rather than mdl_USA_Inf1. You can make the change in the DB, or edit the model file directly. In the model file, if you haven't changed the order of the units, Inf1 has Unit ID 164 and Inf7 has Unit ID 172. So for that model, you need to change the 164 in the long string of numbers, "&"s and "|"s to 172. In short, you can change the models.cached file, line 231 from:

Otherwise, you can look for that model file and change it there. Then delete the cached file (which is rewritten based on the model files whenever it is deleted). Make sure you back-up, of course. This change will not affect currently existing Inf1s on your board, but if you make the change, the next Mil2 you make will upgrade to Inf7.
Mil7 (UID 235) also needs to change from upgrading to Inf5 (UID 170) to Inf7. That will be on line 236 of the models.cached file.

Otherwise, you can look for that model file and change it there. Then delete the cached file (which is rewritten based on the model files whenever it is deleted). Make sure you back-up, of course. This change will not affect currently existing Inf1s on your board, but if you make the change, the next Mil2 you make will upgrade to Inf7.
Mil7 (UID 235) also needs to change from upgrading to Inf5 (UID 170) to Inf7. That will be on line 236 of the models.cached file.
