1st Scenario for beginning player

After playing both tutorials and reading the manual which campaign and AI settings would you suggest to ease a first time player into the game?

I would play bull run and shiloh, just to get the hang of moving troops about and to get used to the battle screen etc.

I did this then moved on to the april 61 campaign. I ended up restarting this a couple of times after two or three turns as i realised mistakes i made or features i missed out on.

There is a bit of a learning curve there, but after you have invested a few hours in the game it becomes really intuative and the investment is well worth it!!!!

I started with Bull Run then quickly moved to Shiloh because it's a little more meaty.

Definitely do Shiloh as both sides. It's a great short campaign to learn the basics. Go wild trying out different strategies to see what works and what doesn't.

I tried all of the tutorials and then plunged into the full April 1861 campaign as the Union. Although it seems huge and overwhelming, that's not a bad start because you cannot do very much in the first year as the Union. Not organized or strong enough.

It's a good place to learn all about organizing your army, corps, division and getting ready. Also allows you to start fiddling with the finances without doing much harm because you're mostly in a sit-tight, defensive mode in 1861.

I'm beginning to have a softer view toward the harsh criticism of McClellan. I find myself being overly cautious and believing my opponent has twice the actual forces.
