There used to be a site on the web (and it's probably still there) that posted samples of the soundtracks from the Ken Burns documentary. The samples didn't sound truncated, and were less jarring and distracting than most of the music that came with the game. They were also instrumental.
So it was not all that difficult to add them into the sound folder and edit the music.ini and sound.ini files to play them. I also changed the introductory music (no. 10 on the list) to Ashokan farewell -- a great piece of music that was the theme song for Burn's Civil War. The piece is from the 20th century and has a lot to do with nostalgia, but not much to do with the Civil War.
[For those interested, I believe Ashokan was/is a fiddler's workshop camp and the piece was written to be performed on the last night of the program. If memory serves the composer described it as a Scottish lament written by a Jewish guy from the Bronx].
The mod is not hard to make, the trickiest part is rewriting the two .ini files.
