Retreat

if you have an army in a region and an adjacent region 100% military controll, no river between those regions

and now you get attacked...

1) is it normal that your army attemps 10+ times to retreat (in 3 battles) but retreats get cancelt 10 times because of no suithabel retreat path until total annihilation?

2) would be the above normal if you have a naval gun in the defending stack?

3) and if 2 is true why can the army sometimes retreat (seems to just depent on what turn you attack and which force you use to attack) or is it random?
