I just bought WW1 last night - OMG but I have bitten off a lot, this this is a monster!

Is it possible to play the Grand Campaign as a single player, or am I stuck playing only scenarios?

The game selection screen only shows the Grand Campaign as available for two or four players.

You can play the Grand Campaign in single player mode, of course.

The four player Grand Campaign has been designed for multi-player cooperative games (two players against two players), but if you wish you can play as one player only against two AI players and with the support of a third allied AI player...

One other quick question, can the war extend beyond 1918?

Still reading the rules, all 194 pages of them - or at least some of the more juicy ones.

Aside from what Calvinus says, I think its worth saying that the game is actually not as over whelming as it first appears. That said, there are still some things I don't understand at all, like manpower usage in battles

Well, during battles, certain results will make unit suffer a step loss. If such a loss is required, and the loss would entail a unit elimination (i.e. when the unit is already reduced), then a manpower point (MP) is taken instead and the unit stays on fighting for one, or more, rounds.

Only a few results translates into sheer elimination of the unit...or, it may happen when the unit is forced to retreat (and cannot) ...OR...when no MP is available in stock and a loss is suffered...

So it is very important to keep always a good stock of MP.
