Historical play: straightjacketed or free form?

Wed Sep 30, 2009 7:01 am

One question that keeps running in my head is how straightjacketed the campaign will be.

As I see it there's two extremes:

One has fixed events firing at fixed dates. Prussia always declares war on Austrian in 1866. The American Civil War always starts in 1861.

On the other side there's the freeform character which we had in the vanilla EU3 at initial release. Everyone has the same chance and no historical guidance.

Where between the two will VGN fall? Personally, I'd like a system that allows ahistorical outcomes that are plausible, in a "what if ..." way. :)

Long time debate. We will strive to hit the perfect middle. Problem is, the middle varies depending of the player :)

So we have thought of something, and we will see how it plays out. People will be able to set 'Historicity' level for their game, as an Option. Some people prefer a rather sandbox game, some would like to almost read an history book.

Now, as you guess, it means putting more pressure and work on the Historical Design Team. Technically, we know how to have these levels, but each level asks for more work for them. Keeping fingers crossed, so, but you get the idea...

Sounds indeed interesting and I look forward to seeing how it'll be implemented. :)

I really like the idea of giving us a choice of historical or variable. You guys are on the right track, keep up the good work!

Good new for you as my middle is both large and round. You should find it an easy target to hit. ;)
