Orders?

Sat Feb 28, 2009 6:15 pm

I have a couple of questions:

1) I want lets say a unit outside a town/city (read it is better to have units outside a structure unless cohesion is a factor) defend but retreat into the structure and not outside the region. Basically as a delaying exercise, so that they have to siege/assault same/next turn. But I cannot get a unit to do this. If I give retreat into structure they do so straight away.

2) I cannot get units to board transport and move in the same turn. The ships sail prior to boarding. Is this WAD?

Although I bought ACW I haven't really played it. But this game is definitely getting me in the mechanics of the AGEOD gameplay. :coeurs:

Hi!

From my experience you can't do this. if you click the button they will get inside before any fight. And if you left them outside and they are defeated thy will retreat to another adjacent area.
In any case in my humble opinion you don't miss much because of this.
If the force is small they are better inside the fort/structure where the big enemy will not be able to put all his units in the fight at the same time because of the small frontage.
If you stack is big enough to battle it out in the open and teh enemy strong enough to defeat you most of the time is better for your army to escape to another area and survive to fight another day than to become trapped in a fort/city where it can be completely destroyed if defeated (defenders inside a structure cannot escape. They will fight to the death.
Fighting form inside a fort/city is a risky proposition. It have important defensive advantages (at least forts) but if they are defeated they will be completely destroyed and guns and wagons captured.
Maybe the better option is to put the big stack outside and a little garrison inside.

2- No, you must be doing something wrong. :bonk:
If in a port, just stack the land units and the ships together and then order the fleet to move where you want to.
If you are boarding from the coast, drag the land units over the fleet and then order the fleet to move away. They should wait for the boarding before moving.
Also, when debarking its the same. You can order the land units to debark and the fleet to move away and the ships will wait for the land units to debark before moving.
Are you sure you are pointing right when drag and dropping?? do you see teh movement line marked on the map?
Be sure to not try to embark forces with higher weight than the ships transport allowance. They will not try the embarkation and will remain at land.

Regards!

2 -Also, when loading in port, if there are enemy foces in the port region, you need to select 'evasive move' for the ships, or any troops loaded will be left behind [to help defend the port]. Occasionally, there may be 'stealthy' enemies [raiders like Indians or Rangers] in the region that you can't see, that also may require you to select 'evasive'.

What you cannot do is move troops from another region to join ships in port and expect the ships to wait...
Always ask yourself: "Am I part of the Solution?" If you aren't, then you are part of the Problem!

For point 1 arsan sums it up perfectly.

Several years ago I had a post with Pocus about this when a large army ended up besieged and cut off after retreating into a town.
I think the game was changed after this - I can put the reasons for it no better than arsan has.

To be given a choice to retreat into the structure or another region would be a good thing I suppose - but for me it works pretty well this way.

Cheers, Chris
P.S. always worth putting a small unit in a town if you have a large force outside. Not sure why - but I have a feeling it's a good idea (arsan seems to think the same thing - we don't know why but sometimes experience just tells you to do this. I suppose if your main force is driven from the region the enemy will still have another turn before they can take the town).

+1
If the enemy moves on offensive posture (or in defensive but is automatically changed to offensive because of lack of military control on the entered region) it will engage and maybe defeat your army outside.
But as it have no orders to assault the structure even a paltry garrison will keep the city/fort out of your enemy's hands at least until he orders an assault next turn.
If the city/fort is empty the enemy will get control of it as soon as he expels your army from the region.
Delaying th enemy's onslaught and negating them the benefits of a structure (supply, bad weather protection...) even for just one turn can be very good for you :coeurs:

Thanks for the tips.
I shall retry the boarding and moving tomorrow but sure I had done it correctly.

Ok tried Frustation in the South and army did embark/move/attack another city in the same turn.

Just another quick question. How is experince calculated cause in the manual it says even if a unit lossed in a battle it would still gain experiance.
Stacks that have participated in a battle doesn't always show experiance though one/two elements in a stack might?

Just playing very simple scenarios to learn the game mechanics.

Hi

I think the elements that kill an enemy element get most of the experience. And killing full elements is what more exp gives.
So its normal that different units get different exp. And defeated unist that kill some enemy unit can also get exp.
Assaulting and taking structures use to give more exp as the enemy cannot escape and is destroyed.
