Rampaging Partisans

I'm playing as the Union. (1.09e/normal aggression). It is October/1862. I'm getting my a** handed to me by Athena. VP/NM is about even. There are confederate partisans running amok in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, and Miissouri. I had the St. louis Massacre event. Made Missouri Confed. I hold all the cities and supply depots. Athena gets lots of free units (partisans) that are suppose to try and retake their homes, but instead are gallivanting around destroying railroads and weakly defended cities way in rear. I lost Independence Iowa.

What gives?

always gotta watch out for those dang partisans....she is trying to win via taking out your supply lines....just like a smart commander you prolly have more powerful forces so she is trying to even the odds by attacking your supply lines.

intel says she has more troops........

Everytime I drag over the confederate stacks, it shows huge concentrations of troops. (1000+ strength corps, and or multiple 400+ divisions) Am I being pinkertoned or what. When I do group my troops in similar arrays usually evenstrength, I'm losing whole corps. even when on the defensive........

To avoid raiders tearing up your regions you need to adopt a good strategy:

Illinois: Place a string of gunboats from Cairo to St Louis. Garrison the two harbours north of St Louis.

Iowa: Garrison with double militia brigades the cities along the western river. Sometimes, I base a cavalry and horse artillery stack in Iowa.

Kansas: Garrison Lawrence with a double militia brigade. Have cavalry and horse artillery stacks based in Lawrence in order to kill raiders. This stack will also protect Iowa.

Missouri : Garrison the cities and as MO is now rebel controlled, you need to garrison your supply path. Have cavalry based in St Louis and Springfield to intercept raiders.

Destroy the Indian villages in order to deny supply to raiders.

Capture Fayette, AR. The further you can push back CSA depots, the more difficult is becomes to support raiding cavalry.

what are your division sizes? the best make up for divisions is 11 infantry regiments, 4 artillery batteries and 1 sharpshooter and 1 cavalry plus a good leader. if you cant get this "perfect" size division then i usually subsitute with artillerty for more fire power. with this you should be able to get 500+ strength easy...get 3-5 divisions in a corps (to get 5 divisions without penalties you will need to station some support units for more CP bonus i.e. medical and signal companies) as the union you can get 3-5 corps easy and keep them close together in adjacent regions so they can get the "march to the guns" bonus. Make sure to protect your supply lines. any Army with no supply wont be able to survive long in enemy territory.
