Marines and Sailors

Anyone have basic instructions on useing these two units? I assume they are for landing operations and attacking forts. The best I've managed is to send them to Butler and let them try to crawl up to Richmond. My Naval invasion game is my weakest, any good Naval invasion hints would be welcome.
Thanks.

Hi Geohff, welcome to the forums
Actually, the pontoneer ability (that both sailors and marines have) is AFAIK only good for speeding up the crossing of rivers; it doesn't provide any benefit in naval assaults.

Just try to have one w/ that ability in each corps. I usually leave them as loose units in a corps, some prefer to combine them in divisions.

O.k, so gone are the visions of Marines storming the beaches.
1. What forces would you then use to form a good balanced landing party or one with the most effect? 2. What steps are involved in taking out a fort and what forces are best for this type of operation? 3. If you have Art. on a ship, does it boost the effect the ship has, or must the Art. land first and join the attack from land?
I need someone to brief this landlubber on all things Naval.

1. any common division/corps does the job, we are in the 19th century not WWII
most important thing is favorable odds, add a marine unit and if you want some extra artillery and you can beat any "default" fort with a single division (usually), to be on the safe side take 2 divisions ^^
