Merging Units

The manual states you can merge similar units if they had suffered losses but doesnt explain how and for the life of me have tried just about everything and cant seem to do it. Any ideas?

Of course, there are some units that can fit another element but don't come with it built in. For examle, some 2 Line Inf/1 Cav brigades can fit another Line Inf, but it will not auto-replace.
By the way, (I forgot to take a screen capture) I noticed that sometimes buying replacements for certain elements has a different cost from buying them as reinforcements. I noticed a discrepancy in the Light Arty cost in the Far West scenario (I know bigus' scens aren't supported, but its the same game engine) and the cost for Line Inf changes over time from 9/10/1 to 10/10/1 and (I think) 12/10/1 without inflation.

Enf91 the cost for lineunits or all units for that matter is equall to the number of units currently in circulation, for example in the GC april 61, the first turn when you have no line units the cost 8-10-1 but by the june they cost 10-10-1, its all related to the numbers and masses of troops you have as well as inflation.

Except that I can buy 2 LI brigades from IA for 18/20/2. That comes out to 9/10/1 per regiment, but the replacements are 10/10/1 or even 12/10/1.
