CSA Capital

Mon May 12, 2008 8:53 pm

:) :) Hello all,

Just bought this game and have been "toying" with it for almost a week now. I say "toying" because I have not yet played a full game and am still learning all the rules, etc. I have also been perusing the forums and find them to be overwhelming in a good way -- this game certainly does have its share of support, which is a good sign for future updates to tighten the historical accuracy of the project.

Anyway, my first question -- is there any advantage to moving the Confederate Capital from Montgomery to Richmond, in the game, in the April 1861 Scenario? I know historically it was for political and foreign intervention reasons...but all I see in the game are penalties. Maybe I am wrong, but that is why I post for you all to help clear me up :)

I am a semi-noob to wargaming (in the sense that I am experienced but nowhere near as experienced compared to a lot of members on here)...however I am NOT a noob with history. The American Civil War era is my single favorite period to study, and I consider myself a wealth of knowledge on the subject. That being said -- this game is not perfect but historically-speaking, it is probably the best Civil War game on a PC. Well done!

Don't take the penalties. The capital will move to Richmond automatically after a few turns with no penalties.

Thanks Jabber! I have played thus far into late June 1861 -- why didn't it move in May, when it moved historically?

One more question -- why doesn't Beauregard start off with the force in Charlston in April 1861? And where is Major Anderson? (I am guessing his lack of inclusion is due to the fact that he is a Major)

I think if the campaign started before late April, they would have moved it in May. I think most of the early issues with the placement of generals would tend to be for similar reasons. They wanted to start Beauregard with an army, so he'd be ready for First Manassas. I'd like to see Anderson included, I believe he did have battlefield command of a division at Antietam. The trouble there is that not enough generals get killed off, or become unavailable for other reasons. Fortunately adding Anderson is moddable ...

Next question (and an obvious Noob one) -- why do they start out certain armies (take Beauregard's for instance) "locked" for 3 or so turns? What is the point? Is it so you can add units to that army and build it up before moving it?

And why does the "bombard Ft. Sumter" event take place, and yet if you do nothing on your own, the Union still occupies it at the end of the event?

And Why is Lincoln's inaugural speech in May???

Sorry for all the questions...

Hmmm - I think we're getting into ask PhilThib territory ... any answer I could come up with for those questions would still be a guess ...

From what I've read of the early threads, AACW started out as a much simpler game, and evolved into this monster (monster in a good way). :D

You have to commit troops to it or Yanks will reinforce and then that is real trouble? Same you also have to take Norfolk - commit trops to doing it - it is just a matter of learning the games quirks?

moving the capital (Ahistorical)

I would like to have the chance/option to move the capital to a different city than Richmond. I have in mind Atlanta. I think i would be more defensible. :tournepas

I once changed my Capitol back to Montgomery in an earlier game. Could not help myself being a Skynnrd fan. Result yanks land at Milton and charge all the way up to Montgomery, Montgomery fell after short seige.
Thought it would be far enough away from anywhere that I did not need to defend it with a substantial force.
As CSA just the cost of moving Capitol needs to be considered and whatever I am too paranoid now not to defend it wherever I move it?
The options seemed to changed to where I could move it to depending on stage of game.

That option is available. Click on the text of the option, rather than the signature area, to cycle through the available cities, and their various costs. Clicking on text also works for volunteers, bonds, and taxes to give you more options.
