Artillery upgrades

Fri Oct 24, 2008 11:01 am

I think it would be handy to have a list of how arty units upgrade and when, anyone has something like that?

6 lbs upgrade to 12 lbs

10 lbs upgrade to 20 lbs.

(5%?) some chance every turn.

No more upgrades are available

Certainly, upgrading smoothbore to smoothbore and rifle to rifle makes much more sense than the current setup

Regarding % chances of improving... is the chance checked every turn? o
If so, a 25% chance per turn would suppose an upgrade practically assured in 4 turns :bonk:

6lb Artillery retirement

Fri Nov 07, 2008 3:00 am

Given histroically few 6lb guns were cast in the early part of the war and generally by late 1862 these were melted down and recast into other artillery pieces.

Are they / Should they be removed from the force pool for purchase by June 1862? Replaced by "Rodmans -as these seem to be in short supply.

In mid 1862 should the organic artillery in brigades be changed to 12lb gun- howitzer "Napoleons" for the north and 12lb howitzers / mixed batteries?

I will admit that I am currently at March 1862 in my first long campaign.

Currently, the 6lbers are upgraded to 10 lb Parrotts, which though an upgrade, hardly makes sense for an upgrade path.

Also the 12 lbers are currently auto-upgraded to 20 lb Parrotts, which given the usefullness of the 12 lber throughout the entire war does not make sense either. By changing the upgrade path of the 6 lbers to 12 lbers this should somewhat make more sense in game terms. The end result being that 6 lbers will auto-upgrade to 12 lbers over time and the 12 lbers will not auto upgrade to 20 lb Parrotts anymore.

Your getting there - what I am pointing to is due to the short period of use of the 6lbrs they should not be available for purchase - or have only a short time period to be purchased - this would include artillery organic to brigades.

one way of achieving this for the Union would be to swap out an art0 for the unused art5 PA which would give you a Rodman in Pennsylvania instead of for instance a 6 pounder in West Virginia. The last pool change is a bit early for this so it would probably be better to add a new pool change at a later date.

However I think that the late presence of 6lb ers (which get upgraded faster thru time) is there as an aid to Athena who likes a bargain when buying artillery.

for the CSA replace the 6lbr with the Mixed Battery

Sat Nov 08, 2008 6:56 pm

If you do not have to have the same element titles for each side then the possible solution for the CSA could be to replace the title / name for the 6lbr battery - title with Mixed or 12lbr Howitzer batter for the light battery.

The upgrade path to heavier / more powerful batteries would make more sense as this would reflect the replacement of lighter weapons with more / heavier ones.

re Historical Accuracy MOD

Sat Nov 22, 2008 4:14 am

Gray_Lensman wrote:Current Historical Accuracy MOD work has reworked the 6 lbers to upgrade to 12 lbers instead of 10 lbers. This change has been made to work in both the model upgrades and the specific event upgrades. The 12 lbers no longer upgrade at all, either by model upgrade or by specific event upgrade. This means if you want 10 or 20 pounders, you have to specifically build them and for now there is no upgrade from the 10 lbers to the 20 lbers.
