AGEsettings problem

I've been trying to install Clovis's mod for awhile, and it's (apparently) necessitated reinstalling this game. However, every time I do so, the installation stops at the "insert CD key" thing and I have to stop the process for the installation to finish. When I try to open AGEsettings manually, I can't, whether I run it normally or as an admin (Vista-64 sucks). For the record, it worked fine before.

common question, where have you installed the copy of the game?
if it is not installed in C:\Program Files, then go to the new copy and try this method:
open ACW\settings\general.opt, then to the end of the file type your key manually.

What program should I use to open general.opt?
And I have Vista, so the game is not in Program Files, but in its own file in C:.

Notepad works fine!
