Look at event 40 and 41. I'm the confederates. Then look at the battle report. There are no cavalry units in the opposing force? The unit was trying to use evasion to move past St. Louis in passive mode. If the union detected them and attacked fine. I just found the event very odd.

What I think happened is that you started with 20 hit points, took 438 losses which is about 15 hits. During the retreat from combat you lost more than 5 hits and thus your unit was killed. So if you lost less than 5 during the retreat from combat your unit would have survived. You must have been on attack or defence mode and then entered a region with high enemy MC and this triggered your cav to offensive stance. Also if you had more than one unit in the battle they could have shared out any retreat from combat hits so this again might have saved your units during the retreat.

Supplies were fine. They were in passive stance with evasion orders.
