The AI takes a long time in the Demo. The hour glass just frustrates me.

Is the real game any faster?

The game is really quite fast; we don't have many complains about this... looks strange indeed

On the first turn it takes 60 seconds before the AI begins to move.

Not sure, Gray...
In 1863 with lots of armies and troops around it may take so long. But on the first turns on the AACW campaign when most of the units are not still on map it looks too much processing time.
On my poor 6 years old computer it don't think it take so long at all!
Razz, maybe you could try the demo again, I think the current one is an updated demo and the game engine performance has been optimized.
Maybe it goes better for you now than two years go.
