CSA (Charles) vs Union (OneArmedMexican)

Sat Jul 09, 2011 4:50 pm

Hi there,

This is my first AAR and PBEM. It will certainly be interesting. I’m playing against OneArmedMexican. I’ve played the AI since February and decided it was time to up my game and see what happens. Here are the general details.

I’m the CSA
July 1861 – GC. Yes, I chose this as I find the start to be a little more realistic.
Rules - standard attrition, small battle delay, no general randomization, 75% blockade box rule. Regarding ‘raiding’ it is a bit complicated. Free raiding in any state where a side has a stack of troops of at least one division (or three brigades). In all other states put together neither side may conduct more than a total of five raids at a time. Against the AI, I never really did ‘raids’ other than rail cutting.

I need to figure out how to post pictures on here, but for now, it will be text only.

Trans-Mississippi – I moved Price south to Springfield. His army is very weak right now at PWR 100.

Tennessee – 1 brigade from Nashville to FT. Henry. 1 brigade from Polk to Island 10. The Knoxville force to Nashville. Polk to Gibson (NE of Memphis). All river ships to the Obion Confluent (just south of Island 10)

Virginia - 1st VA cavalry to Harper’s Ferry (hoping to blow the depot). Huger’s brigade from Norfolk to Manassas

Ocean – all brigs to blockade. Ship from Richmond to shipping box.

Economy – Volunteer with 1,000 bounty. 8% bonds. 30 RR. 20 River.
Replacements – 1 of each except for service, supply and HQ
Reinforcements – 3 brigades in TN and 1 in AR. 2 sharpshooters in MC and 1 in NC

General strategy – As the CSA, I intend to play defensively and outlast the Union. I’ve pretty much always beaten the AI, but I know PBEM is very different. For 1861, I intend to build a fort in Norfolk with coastal artillery and build

Hi Charles! :)

You must upload your pictures to a file hosting service (such as MediaFire, GigaSize, Megaupload, Rapidshare ...) and then insert the URL of your image into your post (clicking on "Insert Image" icon).

Good luck in your PBEM game and have fun!! ;)

Which software do you use to save pictures to your computer (i.e. during the game, I would assume I take a picture by using the print screen button).

Choices are really numerous, but the basic Paint should be readily accessible to any Windows user and it got just enough tools for those extra touches in your AAR...
Just don't forget to change file format to .jpg while saving, as default one is .bmp (unwieldy for online posting).

Yes, I do have Paint that came with the laptop, but how do I save multiple pictures while I'm doing the turn?

Charles

1. Start the Paint.
2. Start AACW, play your game.
3. Press PrtSc when you want your first print screen.
4. Press Alt+Tab (switching to Paint, without exiting AACW).
5. Press Ctrl+v (or select Paste from Edit menu) in the Paint.
6. Save your picture - better in .jpg immediately.
7. As Paint does not support multiply designs at once, start a new one (Ctrl+N, or New from File menu).
8. Press Alt+Tab to switch to AACW (or simply select its tab in the bottom of your screen).
9. Repeat steps 3-8 as much as needed, saving pictures under different names of course.
10. Edit your saved pictures as you wish later (start 2 Paints for example to crop some additional info from one picture to another, etc.).

A bit clumsy, but easier for me than learn how to use more advanced graphic design program (which could very well be not a free one in addition).

Hi Charles!

You can use several programs. I use Paint or PhotoScape. Images are saved by default in .JPG format.

Regarding your question of adding multiple images, save all the images you want and then press the 'Insert Image' button (mountain icon) every time you want to add an image. It's very easy! ;)

Enjoy playing! :hat:

Late July:

Missouri – Price is still going to Springfield

Kentucky – The Union has already invaded, I'm pulling my 2 militia units to TN.

Tennessee – Polk is moving to Humboldt. The other TN force in Nashville is going to assault Bowling Green.

Image

Virginia – A very interesting move. The Army of the Potomac has bypassed me at Manassas and taken Fredericksburg. That puts the AoP within striking distance of Richmond. To counter that. I’m sending Huger with most of his force from Norfolk and a brigade from Williamsburg to man the fortifications. In the event he can attack Richmond. I hope he runs into double the numbers with siege artillery and Huger manning them with his artillery bonus. I thought about a move on Washington, but it’s 23 days. Instead, I’m sending Longstreet to assault Alexandria. I’m blowing the depot in Harper’s Ferry and tearing up the tracks. A partisan unit has appeared just west of Harper’s Ferry and will tear up the track’s there before heading further west. The cavalry in Harper’s Ferry will move east. I’m sending 1 brigade from Johnston to Harper’s Ferry hoping to grab a piece of Union Artillery there.

Economy – I bought 9 6lbs and 1 coastal artillery, (I’ll built a Fort in Norfolk with Coastal Artillery) 3 brigades in NC, 4 brigs, and 10 RR
Measured Taxes – the max allowed.

Late August 61

Missouri – Price is now in Springfield. Rolla and Jefferson City have fallen. Once the brigade in Arkansas is finished, I’ll send them up to reinforce him. Silbey has also joined Price there.

Texas – 1 Militia unit to the southwest.

Tennessee/Kentucky – Bowling Green fell to the Nashville Force. Polk is going farther north to Columbus (albeit very weak).

VA – I’m going to spice things up. I’m sending Jackson to take Grafton – 2 cavalry units to east of Harper’s Ferry to tear up tracks. Longstreet south to clear out the cavalry. 2 brigades from Beauregard to take Alexandria. 1 Brigade to take the harbour north of Fredericksburg. It’s all a bit risky. I’m not sure what he is doing sitting there in Fredericksburg. He could still strike at Richmond, but the men are close to 400 PWR in fortifications. I think it would be easily repulsed. At least I hope so.

Image

Economy

Reinforcements - 1 small brigade in NC.
Replacements – 1 heavy artillery
10 RR 5 River.

Regarding the pictures, mediafire says the servers are down, so hopefully these will eventually work.

Late August

Missouri – Nothing happening. Price is still in Springfield.
Arkansas – I’m chasing a cavalry unit to the Indian territory

Kentucky – I’m going to do what I hope are some clever but low risk moves. I’m sending Polk to assault Paducah and the Nashville force just to clear out the cavalry just north of Bowling Green.

Image

Virginia – A lot is happening here. My previous assault on Alexandria was repulsed. Now I’m sending in Beograd with nearly the entire force to take it. I’m leaving a small brigade to hold Manassas. I’m at risk of losing Charlottesville – to counter this, I’m sending Longstreet, Johnston, and the cavalry brigade (Laurel) from Richmond. Jackson took Grafton last time. Now, he’s going to blow the depot and terror up the tracks, then going back southeast. Bee is still in Harper’s Ferry, and my Partisan unit and cavalry are still tearing up tracks in Maryland.

Image

Economy – I’m going to risk it. I’m going with the elite VA brigade and hope it goes to Richmond!

Thoughts - He's playing an interesting game in VA. Basically, he's between me and Richmond, and vise versa (I don't know what he has in Washington FOW). I'm curious about his supply situation, but he seems to be fine so far. So far, no huge battles.

With the river right there, he could be getting supply from it (there isn't a port, but that doesn't mean he couldn't get supply). Also, if he has 25% control of the land territories back to Alexandria, he can get supplies.

Missouri – I’m sending a brigade from Arkansas to Price in Springfield. The Union seems to be content for the stalemate right now, but I’m guessing he’s building some big forces up there for a push.

Arkansas – I didn’t find the cavalry unit, but I took back the Indian village. Watie has appeared, now I’m sending him to Ft. Smith which only seems to have 2 artillery pieces. I’m hoping to grab those.

New Mexico – My militia unit took the territory, Denver doesn’t seem to have a garrison, and I’m sending the militia unit on to Denver.

Kentucky – Polk took Paducah rather easily. The Nashville force destroyed most of the cavalry above Bowling Green. I’m having the forces rally at Paducah and Bowling Green now. I see a cavalry unit it being transported down river to Ft Henry. I’m sending up a ship to try to attack it.

Image

Virginia – P.G.T. lost a battle.

Image

But we still hold Manassas. I’m not ready to lose Manassas just yet. I’m sending Johnston reinforced with the Laurel brigade to go to Manassas. Jackson is on his way to Charlottesville. My partisan and cavalry unit in Maryland are still tearing up tracks. Some 6 lbs are going to Norfolk and 1 to Richmond.

Image

North Carolina - I have a force under Bragg that is going to Rally at Goldsboro.

Image

Economy – I’m going to risk it again. I’m going with the elite VA brigade and hope it is in Richmond!

Thoughts – So far this has been really fun, totally different than the AI. He is much more aggressive, but in a very calculated way.

Early Oct 61

Missouri – The brigade from Arkansas is still on its way to Price in Springfield. The Union seems to be content for the stalemate right now, but I’m guessing he’s building some big forces up there for a push.

Kansas – Waltie stuck hard. He took Ft. Smith and an artillery piece that will be ready in two days.

New Mexico –Militia unit is still on its way to Denver.

Kentucky/Tennessee – He’s sending Grant into TN and will strike somewhere, but where? I’m sending most of Polk’s force (a division of Hindman) south to TN to stop him. Polk holds Paducah with a cavalry unit. I’m still holding Bowling Green.

Virginia – I lost Manassas and lost 2 MP in the battle. So, disappointing on all levels. What’s worse, he’s also taken Christiansburg. I’m going to regroup in Charlotsville while Bragg is coming up from NC with a new force.

Economy – Well, the bad news is my brigade appeared in a pretty bad spot, that little town in the NE of VA.

Replacement – 1 light artillery, 1 field artillery, 10 RR, 5 River.

Has anyone else had problems with Mediafire, it seems only some of the pics will show up at any given time.

Late Oct 61

Missouri – Price is holding Springfield

Kansas – Artillery piece to Springfield, Watie to cause more problems in Kansas and MO.

Image

New Mexico –Militia unit took Denver and is now on the way back to Texas. I’m hoping these extra VP will be worth something!

Kentucky/Tennessee – Grant took Columbus isolating Polk. I’m going to rally at the harbour and then see what happens. I’m sending Polk across the Mississippi hoping to escape. Johnston is still holding Bowling Green.

Image

Virginia – I’m attacking Christiansburg with Bragg’s force. The rest is regrouping in Charlottesville.

Image

Economy –

Replacement – 1 light artillery, 1 field artillery, 10 RR, 5 River.

Early Nov 61

Not a good turn, not at all.

Missouri – Price is holding Springfield

Kansas – Artillery piece to Springfield, Waltie to cause more problems in Kansas and MO.

New Mexico –Militia unit took Denver and is now on the way back to Texas. I’m hoping these extra VP will be worth something!

Image

Kentucky/Tennessee – Polk’s small force was wiped out! I’m regrouping at Humboldt. I shouldn’t have separated my forces so much. Johnston is still holding Bowling Green.

Image

Virginia – This was a painful turn. Two battles speak for themselves. Incredibly, I lost the battle in Christiansburg and my brigade was wiped out in Tappahannock, I lost 5 NM in these two. I’m going to try to take Christiansburg again, this time with Bragg at the helm. The AoNV is still holding Charlottesville, and I have decent garrisons in Richmond and Norfolk.

Nice to see another "first time PBEMer" writing an AAR. I learned a ton in my first one, and a ton more in my second one where OneArmedMexican kicked my can. I've gotten better with each game though. Currently GraniteStater and I are in a big set-to in Feb 63. There are so many subtleties in the game!

I'll be following you and wishing you well!

Jackson, Longstreet and Homes are now Major Generals. Other generals have arrives. I’m sending the ‘good generals’ to the AoNV and Army of Kentucky. The rest are going to Norfolk, Ft Henry and Island 10, and 1 to Marauder.

Missouri – Price is holding Springfield

Kansas – Waltie took the last other Indian town in Kansas, unfortunately, they are now out of food!

New Mexico –Militia unit took Denver and is now on the way back to Texas. I’m hoping these extra VP will be worth something!

Kentucky/Tennessee - I’ve lost Nashville. In hindsight, I should have evacuated Bowling Green. I think I’m trying to do much with too little. For the moment, I’m going to leave Johnston in Bowling Green since he has lots of supplies. I’m sending Hoke now with the remnants of the Nashville force to set up defensive positions in Giles TN.

Image

Image

Image

Virginia – Bee is already starving. Still going to Charlottesville. I’m sending Bragg’s force to Charlottesville as well. Somehow I need to bring my forces together and strike hard. Richmond has a decent garrison, but I it might fall to an assault if we went all in.

Early March 62

No battles, CSA has the corps structure now. Unfortunately, my next army won’t be ready till next turn, so Lee is still waiting.

Missouri – Price is holding Springfield

Kansas – Waltie finally has some supplies, and is heading back to the Indian territory to rest.

Kentucky/Tennessee - Still holding Humboldt, Giles, and Bowling Green. Other units are going to Humboldt and Giles. Johnston is gong to attack Halleck, we have 587 power against Halleck’s 200 or so. I’m hoping to dislodge Halleck, blow their depot, and then head south by dodging other units to get to Giles.

Virginia – Bee is still starving still going to Charlottesville. New units are heading here to reinforce. I’ve structured 2 corps, Jackson and Longstreet. I thought about evacuating to go defend Richmond, but instead, I’m going to spice it up and it McDowell directly to the north. I’ll have nearly a 2 to 1 power ratio.

You insert the pictures. To do this, click on the paperclip (that you used to load the pictures). It opens a box that says manage attachments. When you click on a picture, it adds it to the text where the cursor is.

And I prefer pictures in the text near where it was discussed.

Late March 62

Two battles, I took depot, but he took Bowling Green. The attack on the corps in VA was a disaster with another -3 NM. At this point, I think I need to rethink my strategy and not attack forces unless they are garrison forces. I’ve actually yet to win a field battle, despite my superior generals.
