Does it matter what region you enter another region from when planning an attack?

Say for instance you simply cross the water from Alexandria to Prince Georges in order to attack Washington. Will crossing the waterway create a negative combat modifier?

You can go the long way North one region to Montgomery,Md and then go South East into Price Georges, Md. and be at Washington without crossing any water is why I ask.

Is it worth the extra trek to avoid a negative combat modifier?

* Depends on how strong you are, the time it will take, whether your lines of communication and supply will be exposed - that's why its called generalship, it's a matter of judgment.

NP, it was a total accident posting this here as I was reading an AAR and then thought to ask that question without realising I was in the wrong sub-forum. If a moderator wants to delete this thread by all means do so unless you can move it.

Out of curiosity though does that negative combat modifier remain in effect permanently once you enter a region from across the water, or does it go away if you just sit for a turn having entered in defensive posture since at that point you would have already been there for a whole two weeks? That presumes of course the opponent across the water was also on defensive posture and there was no combat on the turn you entered.

Besides Water on the border between regions is there any other terrain at a border that would effect combat upon entering to attack?

Visually speaking water is the only graphic on any borders that I can see that are easily discernable.


I mean I realize that all regions are classified as one of Wood, Hills, Mountains, Clear, Prairie, swamp etc, but that is not a regions border as it is the whole region so once you enter a region both of you are subject to those modifiers depending on who is attacking and who is defending.

Perhaps someone knows of a link, or a thread that explains all of this as I cannot get much out of the Wiki on this issue other than the bit about Mountains and their effect on frontage.

The best way to understand combat is to fight and then examine the battle's results on the screen displayed for that battle. There are a number of small icons at the bottom, over which you can mouse, that display how these affected the battle.

There is no cut and dried answer - that's why the game is so good. In my PBEM, my esteemed opponent handed me a drubbing by N. B. Forrest against a force twice his size and I'm very sure it was Forrest's leadership that gave him the victory. Terrain affects movement and combat; so does weather, don't overlook weather. Woods, desert, clear terrain, hills, mountains - all affect operations.

There are a few stickied threads about AACW principles and specifics in the general forum and a couple of others in the Strategy forum - and the Wiki, and, of course, the manual. I, personally, like to answer Qs - it makes me clarify my understanding and I reap other information from others posting their answers and opnions, too. With all humility and charity, I would recommend reading these stickied threads and other sources.
