Vista Install Issues?

Mon Jun 25, 2007 4:13 pm

Greetings,

Seem to be having an issue getting BOA to work on my Vista machine. I tried BOA on my XP machine and got it to work just fine. When I went back to Vista, the program seemed to load, but the screen asking for my game key never came up. When I try to run the game after the install, a screen pops up saying that my key does not match (no surprise, I never had the option to enter it it).

Are there any known Vista issues that I'm not aware of?

Barry

Hi sahir!

Have you tried to start the setup utility manually to enter your serial key? You find that tool in the game directory: AGESettings.exe

The setup tool does nothing but to write an ascii file with the game options. So you can try to edit this file by yourself.
You will find the file under ...\Birth of America\BoA\Settings\
The file name of the file you need is: General.opt

At the end of the file you will find this section:

Code: Select all

6. Serial number (unencrypted, keep this file for you only)
Serial           = xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxxx

You can write your serial number there directly.

Why does Vista have to be so blasted difficult?!?!?!

Thanks for this thread as I had to complete the exact steps to enter the key code

The good news is that the program loaded up super quick!!

Hi!

You can edit the file with any text editor. So if Vista asks you which program to choose please select 'Editor' or 'Notepad' :cwboy:

(right click on the file and select "open with", select Notepad)

Possible Solution

Try shutting off the User Account Control Setting in Vista before you install the game. To do this,
1. Control Panel
2. User Accounts and Family Safety
3. User Accounts
4. Turn User Account Control On or Off
5. Uncheck the box, select ok and restart.
6. Install game...same key message will most likely pop up.
7. Do as recommended in the above posts...with the User Account Control off, I was able to get past all the "not authorized" messages that I even received as an administrator.
Once I did this, I was able to access the general.opt file immediately with Notepad, change to the recommended text and save without being blocked.
The game then started immediately after I clicked on the desktop icon.

By the way, you may want to download the d3drm.dll file while you're at it. Instructions should be in one of the other threads.

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread before. It was a great help.

OK... I tried all of the above but when I tried to save the changes made using notepad, I was told my access was denied. Again I followed all of the previously listed posts and I am the admin for my computer. Thoughts?

Maybe that will help. Good Luck.

Note that this thread is 2 years old and concerns Windows Vista NOT Windows 7, but hopefully Windows 7 retains some of the same stupid Microsoft design decisions as Vista did. :D

Worked like a charm!!! Thanks Gray for the help.
